reduce Laptop Hard Drive Noise...

I hook up my laptop to my car stereo often, but for some reason, when ever I'm reading from the hard disk, I get noise from the hard drive reading. If the laptop is reading from the DVD-Rom drive, it makes an even louder noise, horrible nasty noise till the DVD/CD spins into sleep mode.

How can I reduce this? Currently the Dell D830 laptop is hooked up to a Black and Decker cig lighter DC->AC 100watt inverter ( Amazon.com: Black & Decker PI100AB 100 Watt Power Inverter: Home Improvement ).

-it might be because you are using the inverter and AUX at the same time. -Maybe too much power/electricity is being sent to the AUX causing all that extra noise to occur.
you are using the AUX jack to hook up sound to your stereo right?
-You can also try to lower the laptop volume and increase the Stereo volume.

Hooking up to the aux jack, little 3.5mm to RCA stereo made by belkin, it was originally used for my Ipod.

the stereo is a Sony Drive-S CDX-GT500 Sony CDX-GT500 CD player with MP3/WMA playback at Crutchfield.com

Currently if I mute the sound, I can hear it humming in the background, and after checking around, I even turned off the music, and it still produces the sound.

I've tried plugging in the aux through a USB sound card, and the humming is worse. I've plugged it through the docking station and it's at the same level as plugging it directly into the laptop.

Right now, it's the only problem I have besides feedback hum from the engine revving, but that I can handle for now... I'll be replacing a lot of my wiring in the car soon, and segregate the wiring properly.

I can mute the sound on the laptop, the hum is always at the same volume... it's like the signal is crossing over onto the headphone jack, not specifically volume controlled.

I can mute the music/stop the music, and hear the hum when I raise the volume on the HU.

don't plug anything in..just change the source to aux and turn the volume up. if you still get the noise it's the head. unit. If the noise goes away unplugging the inverter, it's a bad inverter.

damn.... no way to resolve that then... would adding an APC UPS be helpful in removing the noise?

APC Smart-UPS 1500VA USB & Serial 120V

I'm waiting for my 1.5Kw power inverter to arrive at my home before I hook it up. Hope it can handle it.

Currently my setup works at home where if I cut off power to the main supply the laptop is told to shut down, and as the last signal the laptop sends out to the UPS it tells the UPS to shut down.

Got to love the serial ports on the UPS.

my plan is to have my car all interconnected, but the sound quality is bothering the hell out of me.

I'll make that new thread with my diagram and plans for everything.

yeah i was gonna say try a ground loop isolator. that usually removes any humming noises. SEe if u can find one in line with a 3.5mm jack cuz most of them come with RCA's attached to it.

google it. you'd also need 3.5mm to RCA adapters. or just a 3.5mm male to male wire to splice.

Inverters can inject a lot of noise into their AC output. I would try the ground loop isolator as suggested before. You can get them at Wal-mart or any local car audio shop would have them too. You could also try getting a DC-DC convertor for your laptop.
