Do you need an aftermarket HU for subs/amp?

I have an alpine amp and eclipse subs that i want to put in my fit and i also have the stock radio(not navigation). Do i need to replace my headunit before i install the rest of this equipment or not? If not....how do i do it?

the fit stereo has no rca pre-outs and even if it did, they would probably be weak. if you want to run amps off of pre-outs, you will need to replace the HU. if you are content with speaker level inputs into your amp then you could get away with keeping the stock deck.

you can find a couple choices of dash kit and wiring hardware at sonicelectronixs.com

additionally, don't you crave the extra features of a good aftermarket HU? sub control, phase control, multiband and/or parametric EQ, etc... after owning a good aftermarket HU, even a good factory HU like the fit's just does not satisfy.

you dont need to replace it, you can get a line-out converter and that'll give you signal to amps

its recommended to get a new headunit, just cuz it'll sound better

thanks for the help. I don't even have my fit yet and I'm already looking at goodies to buy for it haha. I want to keep it looking stock, thats the only motivation for not replacing the HU.

did some quick research on line out converters and most of them are crap. however, these guys make some active models that have recieved good reviews and contain many nice features. you'll notice the prices are significantly higher than even good mid-level aftermarket HUs so this will probably only appeal to someone set on keeping the factory HU:
