Installed Crutchfield Kit... Question.
Installed Crutchfield Kit... Question.
color is good... fitment is okay... the gap at the bottom under the hvac controls is there... and the top is a bit "wavy"...
but the disappointing part that i hadn't seen anyone else post about, is that the metal brace, which connects the hvac controls to the hu in the stock unit, couldn't be mounted to my aftermarket alpine without drilling...
the downpart there is that the brace also screws to the dash creating a firmer, more secure fit...
anyone delt with this?

i had the same problem and once i got the wire sorted it started working right. i don't mind the kit so much, i too wish that i could have used that brace to hold it in.
on a positive note i'm getting a double din dvd/nav unit if i can rob a bank....
check the cord, you should be able to do this w/o taking everything apart. look where the cords are bolted beside/inside where the glove box swings out from.

good info, ill try to get to it when i can...
check the pics on headunits in the ICE forums. mine is in there...not the best quality and i don't know where the hell i put my camera.
you can't tell looking at it head on, but it seems to "flex" so it's just not 100% solid. It's like how the old radios used to have that cord from the back of them mounted to the firewall....it's almost like i need that to keep it firm.
it's in there, but i'd like a firmer fit.

i know it would be a pain, but you should be able to drill a couple of holes in that bracket to match up with your HU. or duct tape it together
once i get the new DD unit, i'll be expecting to see your "how-to" thread so that i can do it as well w/o messing it all up
lemme know how it goes, if it firms it up then i'll do it regardless.

wanted to follow up on this... i mounted the metal internal bracket to the crutchfield kit and alpine hu and it's in there much more firmly without all the rattles and creaking that used to be there... and it'll be much more of a challenge to take the hu
no pics but it's fairly straight forward:
1. mock mount the brace to the hvac controls, and make sure the hu holes are level with the hu...
2. measure... you want the center of the bracket-to-dash mouting holes to be 8 1/8" apart... you also want to make a measurement somehow from the bracket to the front of the hu to ensure that it's at the right angle as well
3. leave the screws that hold the plastic bracket onto the hu... more bracing always helps
4. drill - mark the two holes per side that you want to mount the bracket to and into the hu... then drill
5. i had to find longer machined screws to account for the extra length needed...
6. screw the bracket into the hu
7. screw the bracket into the hvac control unit
8. take measurements again to ensure that the brackets are the right distance apart from one another, and at the correct side-angle
9. mount it up, screw it in, reap benefits
it's a fair bit of work for not much visual benefits... the gap at the top is still there, BUT it is solid... very solid and doesn't creak and rattle anymore... worth it...
sorry for the lack of no pics... i was trying to get it done fast... just make some decent measurements, drill some holes, mount, and done.
