5 channel vs 3 channel audio setup

A lot of people say that for true audiophile grade sound is achieved by not using the rear door speaker locations and just running component speakers in the front and subs in the hatch. The only reasons I've heard so far are:

1.) Cancellations can occur in the confines of a car
2.) Soundstage should be in front of the listener, like at a concert

Now, I know I like the music to surround me -- in fact, on the stock setup I currently have, I like to fade it slightly rearward for that purpose. So, that's a matter of preference.

I was planning on getting components for the front and coaxials for the rear until I heard about this cancellation business. How much of an issue is that really? Can anyone tell me if one end of the audio spectrum (ie bass or treble) is more prone to cancellations? My thought is that if it's the lows that tend to have issues, I can just install small coaxials in the rear doors and use bass blockers; conversely, if it's highs that have cancellation issues, I can install the woofer half of a set of components and leave out the tweeters.

Any thoughts?

Is there a reason you prefer 2 separate amps? I'm hoping to replace my monoblock because I have it hidden inside the wheel of the spare tire, and there isn't room for another one. I really don't want any amps visible or in the way unless I have to for financial reasons or sound quality.
