New project....WHEELS!
New project....WHEELS!
Well, I went to get the alignment done today at a local shop that does lowered cars. They also sell HUGE rims...like 28"'s and stuff. BUT...they had a floor model of Konig Rewind's that were for someone but the offset was kind of not what they wanted. So these have been sitting here and I got them CHEAP as all outdoors! I felt like I could do something with them as I thought that they would look too "stockish" silver painted. So I got creative. They are by far done...But you can imagine what they will look like!
Basically going for a black wheel with a red anodized lip. Two pictures show the painting of the wheel face black. One picture shows how well the anodized paint came out on the originally polished lip. That quick shot of anodized red was just to test to see if I will like the way it comes out. Turns out, I love it! It may be a week before the tires are mounted on there because I still have to paint the other two wheels with the black...Let that dry a day or so, then mask the faces and shoot the lips in the red anodized paint. After that, it takes 7 days for the red to cure and then I will quickly wetsand and then shoot it with clear! It will look NASTY I promise! I will update this original post with pictures as they come in.
I figured the rims are cheap, look decent and I can custom them without repainting Volks or something like that. This should hold me over in the wheel department for a little bit. We will see.

UPDATE: Well, I am a peckerhead. I TRIED to do this a SIMPLE way. Note-- SIMPLE does not ALWAYS equal BEST!!!!
Long story short, I prepped the wheels, not too bad but the black paint wasn't sticking like it should. So I was a little upset. On another note, the anodize paint looked SUPER on the polished lip. However, that isn't bare aluminum. That is polished aluminum clearcoated from Konig. So when you do a LIGHT scuff with steel wool, you can see the scuffing through the anodizing. I didn't like that and I didn't like the way the black paint was curing. So this is what I did...I stripped EVERY wheel with paint stripper. Be careful, this stuff burns you if it gets on you. Like leave a scab burn. So DupliColor sells a base coat for their anodize paint. I laid that down on the lips tonight. It isn't as light but I dig it because it is a little richer red. Saturday, I will prime the spokes and the inside of the wheels. After that cures, MAYBE Sunday but possibly Monday, I will shoot the black on there. All the while, this gives the lip time (optimal is 7 days just for that paint) to cure. Once the wheels are shot in black, I will take the masking off and clean everything once again. Then I will shoot the wheels in a DupliColor wheel specific clearcoat. It will give a super glossy finish while maintaining resistance to heat and chemicals.
I THOUGHT I would shoot them in a few days and have them on for the weekend, but they ARE wheels...no matter how cheap, I figured I would just take the time, prep them right and shoot them right. Give it a couple of weeks and these will be HOT. I could have probably paid a shop to do them right, but these will be ALL MINE...ALL MY IDEA...ALL MY WORK! Now, if I can make sure that the spray dust in the garage doesn't settle on more stuff in there!

I have new pictures. They are at the top of the page in my original post.
Anyway, the lip SHOULDN'T scratch. Most wheels are painted from their factory. Very few are powdercoated. And most wheel places try to use hard plastic bead tools to get the tire on...at least this place does because they do a lot of high end wheels.
The paint is pretty good and I prepped them nicely. They cured for the standard 7 days and I just washed the wheels and dried them. Nothing goofy going on. They should be fine as the paint I used was HD and the clear coat was designed specifically for wheels. There are a ton of layers of paint too.
For the lip: 2 layers of basecoat for the anodized look. 2 layers of red anodize paint.
Wheel face: 2 layers of primer. 3 layers of black.
Total wheel: 2 layers of clearcoat.
For the most part, there are 6 layers of paint.
I sanded with a 320 grit, then smoothed it with 800. The paint stuck like glue.
I will have pics in a bit.
