Would you recommend 15's or 16's? the rotas have a 40+ offset.

personally I like 16's on the fit better, but its all personal preference. if you go 16" 205/45/16 if you go 15" 205/50/15

should i worry about having a small sidewall? Like if i hit a pothole i don't want a bent rim.

Dont hit potholes.
The lower the middle number (205/50/15's, 205/45/16's) the smaller the tire tickness/profile is. Width (first number) also makes a difference in profile size.

I have the Nippon racing GT-3s which I'm sure are very similar. 16", +40 offset on 205/40 tires, no rubbing and no rim dents. But drive carefully.
