That Danged H

If the sun is at just the right (wrong?) angle, I get a very annoying glare from the chrome H on the steering wheel. I've been thinking about sanding it and either staining or painting it black. Does anyone have experience with or suggestions about doing this?

If you were driving north on highway 99 as the sun came up, you would know what I'm talking about. I do a lot of driving all over CA for my job, and we have a lot of offices up in the central valley. Sometimes I need to be there when they open.

With the nail polish, did it end up a glossy black? I'm looking for a matte black end result, so I can stop hanging my microfiber towel on the steering wheel. I may start with a folded piece of 80 grit wet-dry and a sharpie.

Kev, thanks for the offer. We'll have to get together one of these days and compare notes. I like what you've done with your Fit. As a matter of fact, it was you who inspired me to move my front plate (my second mod).

Cool! I didn't know that existed. Did you do anything to prep the surface, or just paint it on? I'm curious as to how well it would stick to a shiny chrome surface.

Get some matte clear paint from a hobby shop

A decent hobby or craft shop should have clear matte paint or matte in most other colors for that matter. A matte finish will have a lot less glare than a glossy finish. You could pick a color that matches or compliments your paint. You'll probably need some type of plastic or metal primer to get the paint to stick.

If you want something less permanent, you could try some anti-glare plastic film like the stuff made for GPS screens. Any place that carries GPS should have some - Radio Shack or Staples. Cut to fit and press it on with a popsicle stick.

For something more esoteric, I suppose you could try a glass etching compound also found at craft stores. I wouldn't leave it on the chrome for long - it would probably eat through the plastic a lot quicker than it does for glass.

The cheapest solution - just sand it to remove the shine.

i sanded it alittle so it will "grab" then paint away. that hobby paint idea sounds like it would look more professional.

I think you can pry it off with a screwdriver and paint it. I bought the red stickers that make it look like a type R badge lol

This has got to be the first "My car's got too much bling!" thread I've ever seen in my life.

j/k, I had a similar issue on the civic, wiper arm lost all its paint and was a very efficient mirror at a very bad angle.

If it were me, I'd find a way to make it appear as OEM as possible (at least to the untrained eye) so it doesn't bite later. Perhaps match the car's exterior with touch-up, or something on that order.

I think the anti-reflective sticky film is a pretty good idea. Easy to get rid of...

the heat from the interior actually made the clear on the emblem peel off.. my emblem has the "type R" inserts as well and when i peeled the clear off it made it alot less "glary" as i was having the same problem too
