Tiring Tire Decisions
HI, Looking at the Yokohama Avid Ascend GT but I see 205/55R16 available. I currently have Altimax 205/50R16. Would 55's work on a Fit Sport 2010? I know the stock fit tire is 185/55 but wondering if 205/55 might cause rubbing? Thoughts?
205 rubbing.
I would go up to 195.
I took delivery of a '09 Fit Sport 5M in October '08, after a string of other Hondas over the years ('79 Accord LX hatchback 5M, '91 Civic DX hatchback 5M, '01 CR-V 5M) and put up with the crummy Dunlop Sport SP (IIRC the model) tires that came on the car through the following winter and spring, then began looking for a suitable replacement. At the time all I could find in the stock 185/55R16 were the same Dunlops, and Bridgestone Turanzas, so I began researching the possibility of different size tires on the same size wheels. I was happy to find out that 205/50R16 tires would work just fine with nary an issue, so after some looking around I put Michelin Pilot Exaltos (IIRC the model) on the car and loved them until it was time for replacement a few years later, when I learned they had been discontinued. I replaced them with Michelin Premiers, another excellent tire. When they were ready to be replaced I found, once again, they were not available so more research ensued. Last January I got a set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus tires, which, outside of one extreme winter condition where they slipped a bunch at a gas station that didn't know what a shovel or plowing service was (!), they were great.
This past December the '09 Fit Sport got replaced by a '19 Fit EX with a CVT (new for me!), my first used car, from my local Honda Dealer. Part of the trade-in deal was that they were going to swap the tires from my '09 Fit to the new/used '19 Fit as the Continentals were less than a year old and in superb shape (the dealer was informed that the Contis were a different size than stock, but said "no problem". But, once the two cars were in the service department they said they wouldn't do the swap as the bigger tires would mess with the TMPS and ABS. Hmm, I never had a problem with that on the '09 Fit; I figured they balked at doing it for legal reasons. Fine, I understand that, but I told them that was a dealbreaker as I really did not want the stock Firestones that were on the '19 Fit. To my amazement they said they would pop for whatever tires I wanted in the stock 185/55R16 size so long as the price was not something crazy.
I went home and did, literally, 2 minutes of research and came across a fairly new Bridgestone tire, their Weather Peak model, that rang all the bells on Tire Rack. The dealer came through in the end and, so far, I am thrilled with the tires. Key things for me in a tire are performance/safety related; I know that MPG will go down, but I am okay with that for better grip and handling in the wet and snow.
