Should I Buy Winter Tires in The Pacific Northwest?

I have an 07 Honda Fit base model that I plan on taking up to Stevens Pass a lot this winter. I don’t know whether I should get winter tires or chains.

My biggest problem with winter tires is that they’re so expensive and we hardly get any snow in Seattle. From what I’ve read, snow tires will cost upwards of $700 after getting wheels and getting them out on.
Is there cheaper alternatives? Should I look for used tires?

If you plan on going multiple times this season it would be best to invest in a good set of winter tires, as it will offer the best performance in snowy/icy conditions. However, even with a set of winter tires local laws could required drivers to carry snow chains.

I used to drive my Fit up to Tahoe for a couple of seasons and it was a decent experience overall but icy inclines were a real pain from a stop. Bought a beater AWD van last year and icy inclines are no problem, the Fit stays home.

I run Michelin X-Ice (non studded) Winter/snow tires here in the Seattle area on both of our two Fits. Much safer when the bad weather hits and keeps the mileage down on our Spring/Summer/Fall sets. These cars are great in the snow. When properly equipped.

Used is a great option. I have found good sets of snow tires for $200-300 already mounted on wheels. Check craigslist, offerup, and FB marketplace.
