Engine light on 2010 Honda fit 2010

Hello everyone,

I got this used Honda fit couple of weeks ago. I am seeing Engine light on the car. Few days ago it got turned on and I took it to my mechanic and it was EVAP code. He said the gas seal was not tightened may be that's why the code came up. The code was erased.
Today again the engine light lit, yesterday I did saw a warning "Fuel cap check" on the odometer.

Any suggestions? Should I do a EVAP canister test ?

Try getting a new gas cap first.

You can even start by checking the fuel cap seal and see if it is in good condition. Try cleaning it with WD40. Make sure the mating surface on the car is also flat and not rusted.

If that fails, replace the gas cap.

Every time you put gas, be sure you tighten the cap until it clicks a couple of time.

Thank you guys. I checked the cap and it looked okay. I don't know about that cleaner WD?

I am going to get a gas cap today from Ottawa Honda. They said it will cost me $52. I just hope it will remove the code.

I have changed the cap. Should I now clear the code or will it go by it's own ? Sorry I have very little experience with these things.

Sometimes it will clear on its own sometimes it will not. Change out the cap and clear out the code and see if it comes back.

Thanks. I have changed the cap and cleared the code. I hope it doesn't come back.
Let's say if it does come back what should be my next steps ? Mechanic told me some EVAP canister test! do you think there is something critical is broken inside ?

Probably a leak within the EVAP system. Check with a smoke test and check operation of components using bi-directional tool. Could be a bad purge valve, canister solenoid, similar. I don't see canisters going bad too often on Japanese made vehicles...
Often times with EVAP codes on newer vehicles, vehicle will run overnight or engine off test after so many hours.

A bit of info about P0456. It explains the EVAP system a bit and what to check.

Since you don't seem to have a check engine light, might not be super accurate though...
