Drive-by-Wire reliability question
Drive-by-Wire reliability question
Hey folks,
There might have already been a discussion on this, but I didn't see a classic "search" function and didn't see anything immediately in the tags, so please forgive me if it's been covered.
My detroit crap-pile is in its final death throes, and I'm going to be in the market for a new car in about a month; I want to see if I can make it to 100,000 miles so I can claim a moral victory.
I've already decided on the Fit (which is why I'm here!) but I'm wondering about the long-term reliability of the Drive-by-Wire system. Nothing lasts forever, of course, but it's one thing to have a fuel pump die on you (which I have experienced) and something else entirely to have all steering go out. Since the vehicle has been around for at least a few years in a few iterations, I didn't know if anyone had heard anything about it, positive or negative.
In any event, looking forward to becoming a Fit Sport owner very soon.

You're steering won't go out, the "drive by wire" controls the throttle, not the steering. The Fit does has electric power steering, if that fails you would still be able to steer, it would just take more effort, just like with a hydralic power steering failure.
My Fit is my first drive-by-wire car, but I don't worry at all because of what spreadhead wrote. Drive-by-wire merely replaces solid linkage or hydraulic operated systems with electrical stepper motors, etc. If you fly on commercial airlines, you might take comfort (or not) in the fact that a lot of the older hydraulic control systems have been replaced by "fly-by-wire" systems.
An auto maker would not replace older actuator systems with newer electrical replacements if the failure of any of them would cause complete loss of control and death. Your new Fit won't give you any cause for worry. Good luck with your purchase!

My o3 Maxima, and my wifes 04 Murano both have drive by wire. Over 90K miles on each vehicle, with out problems.
Plus.... been active on Maxima dot org for years, you dont really hear of any failures. I'd say no worrys mate!!

I've only driven a AT Fit Sport (w/ paddles) so I ask you this question. Is there any DBW lag on the manual fits? I have an 07 civic MT and the DBW lag is very, very noticeable about 1 full second of lag.
My 2006 MINI Cooper was drive by wire. Never noticed it untill winter when traction control, a part of the Directional Skid Control system would step in and limit the wheel spin. Kinda weird the first time you floor it and the engine sputters because the computer doesn't allow the throttle to open. Frightneing when it happens and you have pulled out infront of a truck on ice.
