Problems with side airbag
Problems with side airbag
I recently sometimes see the side airbag icon come on in my car sometimes. It is a orange icon that says "Side Airbag Off" and it occasionally comes on but only every once in a while. I only put on HIDs and new Fog Light bulbs. I hope that I didnt ruin anything in the process. I didn't touch anything. But let meknow if ou guys had this problem.

hmm. do u have a passenger when u drive? Is it the one on the gauges right? When my sister rides w/ me n she leans forward, it goes on cuz the sensor doesn't feel her weight against the seat cushion but it senses that the passenger seatbelt is shut.
If you lean too much on the sides (outsides, near door) too much the light comes on. I had a friend in my Fit and he was leaning out the window. I freaked and thought my car was having a problem.
It's mentioned in the owner's manual. I can't remember precisely what it says, but I think this is the gist of it.
Just to clarify: This light says "SIDE" airbag, right? Not the one Kevin's talking about, which is likely "PASSENGER" airbag, when his sis leans forward. That one I understand; it's to keep the airbag from shooting his sister backward. I get that light, too, when I have heavy cameras or my laptop sitting in the passenger seat.
But what would be the scenario where you wouldn't want the side airbag to work? I'm sure it makes sense, but I can't think of how just now.
I am about to leave for work. I gotta try it, gonna do the Detroit lean, or I guess it's the Suzuka lean in this case.
Starting here, the rest of this post is from the next day:
I tried leaning hard against the door, and also leaning across toward the passenger window. The only light I ever saw was the "Passenger Airbag OFF" light, so I assume that's what you meant. Best I can tell, the side airbags (in the sides of the seats) are always "on". Anyone know differently?

Yes, I noticed it too. I get both lights. Passenger side airbag "off" light below my radio come on when I put grocery bags on the front passenger side seat.
Then once I got the side airbag "off" light. The message light appears in the driver side console next to the gas gauge. But I never did figure out what caused it to come on. And it has only happened once about a month ago.
