Drive slow and steady
i know this sounds patronizing but if you really do drive the speed limit or less you do actually save gas.
I didnt believe it for the longest time. but after getting 4 points on my license out of a possible 6 for going 90 on a PA state highway I now obey the rules of the road. which we all should haha. anyway aside from my fear of gaining more points and then result in license suspension i have noticed major improvements in my mileage and fuel economy.
my 94 Integra GSR gets 500km per tank. that is rougly 300 miles per tank. with a 12 gallon tank that is about 25 miles per gallon. granted I hit vtec a lot
anyway on long trips I can get a little more than 600km which is about 360 miles per tank and that is 30 mpg. my car is old and moderately modified for performance sake.
But i imagine that with a FIT you will reach your 40mpg target. Wouldnt hurt to try. it would only cost you a little time and a tank of gas. not the worst thing in the world.
what is sad is that my girlfriend's turbo beetle gets maybe 250 miles per tank and she has a 14 gallon tank. and we never engage the turbo. at least we consciously try not to do so.

You are 100% correct...
I'm consistently getting over 40MPG, cruising at 70. At 80 it's about 35-36, and at 90, it's < 30.
Also, Something isn't right with the Beetle (well, unless it's a crapomatic). My previous car (GTI) had the same 1.8t engine, was HEAVILY modified and still pulled off 300+ miles per tank.

yea, mine had the APR stg3+ kit... about 300HP at the wheels. fuel economy was fine, but i was buying tires at every other fill up...

Doesn't work for me. I drive 65 on the freeway, 35 in the 35, 45 in the 45. I roll the throttle and not mash it to get to speed, release the throttle at a hill apex instead of braking going down hill, etc. I get 31-32 mpg avg.

Tell me about it! I had a quarter tank today and was late for classes, and the car is now sitting in the driveway on empty because I was going so fast

Slow and steady...easier said than done when there are a lot of hills and traffic lights around your home. But yeah on long road trips this yielded me about 37mpg from California to Colorado, and thats including a few long uphill grades.
