Gettin Fit (finally)

I joined here over a year ago, when I was considering picking up a Fit. I went the other way on that and traded my current car for a Porsche Boxster, which I love!

In October, I got laid off from my job, and found a MUCH better job. Well, the job does come with a little further commute, and that ever present annoyance: TRAFFIC.

Looking at my finances, and considering I get extra money for being on call on week every month, I figured maybe a new Fit would work! Well, a NEW Fit was a little more than I wanted to spend...

So I looked around, and jeebus! Most used 07s I can find are BARELY below MSRP for a NEW Fit! Some were even ABOVE MSRP!!! Holy Schnikies!

Well, I found an 07 with only 3700 miles on it, for $13900. I thought, hey, something has to be wrong with it, right? I called, and the dealer that has it up in Plano says there was some work on the passenger side, near the front. So I scrutinized the picture on Autotrader... and had him take a few more. I scrutinized those pictures. Dude, I can't tell it had any work! It looks perfect in the pictures!

So I secured a loan through my credit union and will put $1k down. Saturday morning my father is going to ride with me up there to pick it up.

She's an 07 Fit Sport, silver, auto with less than 4k miles. I think I made out pretty good!

Dropping in price? That's the lowest price used 07 I could find. All the rest were so little below MSRP on a NEW one, or even ABOVE MSRP! It's insane how well they are KEEPING their value.

I just got the Fit home!

The exterior is in fine shape. I can't tell there was any work done, but can see just a hair of a larger gap between the front fender and passenger door. Very hard to notice. The driver's side wheel does have a gash on it, and is wearing a Kumho Ecsta ASX. The rest are the stock Dunlops. (those tires are LOUD!)

The interior was a bit dirty. I'm going to have to do some cleaning. There's a few splatters of something here and there, and it looks like the PO tried to clean the stereo's screen with Windex. Gosh I hope not! I'm going to use some LCD cleaner on it.

The spare tire and jack is riding loose. The screw/bolt to tie it down is missing, and the 'tab' it screws into is broken off on the front end. No biggie, I'll have my buddy Jamie weld it back down, and try to get the tie-down stuff from the dealer. Some of the little plastic push pin things that hold the carpet into the backs of the seats were pulled loose, and part of the interior trim at the base of the B pillar on the passenger side is not quite installed right.

Very minor things that I can deal with easily. She runs great, and feels VERY eager to get up and go from a stop. Cruise control worked well. I filled up in Plano and drove home, about 195 miles, and it took half a tank. Estimation - 38mpg! I have a program on my PDA that will track for me. I'll post after a few months with some averages.

I also turned over 4000 miles, so I'll probably change the oil soon. I have no idea how the PO drove the car, so I'd rather side with caution.

First tank of gas: 36mpg

Not bad. Half was freeway driving at about 75mph the whole way, the rest was around town (some freeway, some city).

Not too shabby!

T.
Yea I have heard nothing but bad things about Dunlops since about '99. When replacement time comes, go with bridgestone or Michellins and the noise will be gone and the tires will last longer to boot. The gas petal being too close and the cheap tires are my only complaints about the Fit. Good luck with your new ride, sounds like you got a good deal!

About 00' I had the Dunlop D60M2. They were a wonderful medium performance tire. They gripped a lot better than the no name tires I'd had on earlier. They rode silently over most surfaces, and were among the first tires to be rated AA for traction.
But I agree that the stock fit tires are pretty weak sauce. I know the stock bridgestone re92's on my WRX sucked as well at everything but snow.

I'm gonna do some shopping around... I had a Tiburon that had Michelin Pilot Sports OEM, and they were nice and grippy, but didn't last long. I put Kumho Ecsta ASX on it after those, and they were pretty good.

The Dunlops on the Fit will have to go... the back end is just too noisy. I can deal with it for a while, but probably within a few months, I'll be looking at replacing the rubber. Maybe even the wheels.

I'll probably call College Hills Honda tomorrow to order some of the bits that were missing...
