Low fuel efficiency?
Low fuel efficiency?
ok so ive read how most you guys average 30+ mpg, but i only get around 23ish. I was wondering what could be the cause of this. I personally think its cause every day i only drive to school and back which is around 12 miles round trip. Also, in the morning i run the A/C on hi to defrost all my windows. Any tips on how to improve my mileage?
Your short commute probably plays a part in that but it still sounds low IMO. Are you auto or manual?
Keep your shifts low. Drive like an old man.
How old is your fit? Are your filters clean? Tires properly inflated? Brakes rubbing?

its an AT sport. i almost always drive in S mode but i always shift at around 2500 and i rarely push it, except when i get on the freeway. My tires are at a nice 42psi last time i checked, air filter seems clean from what ive seen and no brake rubbing

If you drive an automatic, in traffic no matter how much distance between u and the car in front, if yards in front of you has traffic, just let the coasting bring you there.
I drive manual I always featherfoot it. If I ever need power, I downshift. If you have the sport one, downshift and put slightly more weight on the pedal if you ever want speed, dont floor the pedal.
Don't accelrate faster than the car in front of you on side streets. The more stop lights you run into, the more fuel ineffecient your car is going to be. I've gotten down to 20 mpg before just driving on side streets. But then again, I was testing out what would happen if I cruised at 4000+ RPM. Also, when you accelerate, decide if you're going to accelerate all at once, or gradually accelerate, else you'll end up cruising on VTEC, which can eat your gas. Also, I've read somewhere on the Honda-tech forum that many people report having lower efficiencies under the first 5000 miles or so. I can't confirm it because I haven't reached 5K on my car yet.
It's the rev's and the Hi-AC you talked about. That's why diesel's do good on gas, because you don't need to rev them(most don't go over 5500 to 6000rpm)and you don't step on the gas so hard because there's alway's a huge wave of torque available at low rpm's.Now the AC will also kill your mpg.(I live in Florida/the sunburn state)and I notice a few mpg. lose even though I don't run the air on high that much.About being new, when I first drove my car around,I stayed under or around 2000 rpm and avaraged about 40 to 45 mpg. Just try to coast like other's have said.
SoCal?! ...WELL THERES YOUR PROBLEM!

Try running only in the normal auto mode for a bit. To see if its the "S"
mode that is bringing ya down. And pay attention to what the car
naturally does in auto mode.
When in "S" mode try and get into the
highest gear quick without making the engine struggle. I have an MT
but I have noticed that after the initial break in my car has started to get
slightly better MPG's. (although this last half tank is looking grim
hahaa)
Check you air filter (cant imagine its that bad already though)
Even though you want to be gentle on the throttle don't accelerate for
ten years get to the speed you want. And when you are there
try and keep it safely in the highest gear possible.
Try not to be too swayed by other traffic, I notice I get
terrible mpg's when I drive like the people around me.
...anyway... I hope some of this helps,
keep us posted with your progress or lack there of
or just
findings in general.

Hey MB,
I test drove an auto Fit and I must say I now understand the mpg issue. That paddle shift thing can be intoxicating...I love it.
I may get an auto shift in the end...but I will have to practice the art of self-control
if I want good gas mileage.Good Luck.
For what it's worth, when you jump into a Fit, you sort of have to re-learn how to drive in order to get better mpg. Can't be influenced by what the other cars are doing, gone are the days of sudden stops and starts. But once you get the hang of it, the car is pretty fun, and the mpg should improve. My first few tanks I was driving the Fit like it was my old Integra...errr no...mpg went in the toilet.
