New fit, some questions
New fit, some questions
I'm getting an '09 Honda Fit AT Sport at the end of this month. I just had some questions about hypermiling and some gas saving techniques I've read about, wondering if they apply to AT or not.
I drive mostly highway, about 60 miles to and from college every day and then maybe 15 miles in town to high school and work in addition. I'm used to driving a F-150 or Ranger so I know I could drive the Fit just about any way I wanted to and still get better mpg than either of those are getting me right now.
But anyways, as far as P&G goes, will that work for me with AT? I usually stick right around 60mph on the highway and I think I get it, driving up to 70, down to 50, keeping the rpm's low?
Also as far as FAS goes, what is that? Does that even apply to the AT? Other than keeping my tires inflated well are there any other tips I should be thinking about when it comes?

the best place to get hypermiling techniques is

hypermiling (yes, EOC is extreme) on the highway is RETARDED. be conscious of other drivers and all the havoc you'll be creating by driving slower than semis and irregular speeds. now, if you're travelling at very odd times when no-one is on the road... do whatever.
i use to be an advocate for hypermiling... no more.
drive a constant speed at the posted limit.

to the OP: you don't want to P&G on the interstate. The wind resistance is too great and you will decelerate too quickly to make it efficient. I would say 45-55 is a max speed for P&G. Also, make sure the Fit is "flat-towable" before shifting into neutral or FASing, or you may damage the tranny.
On the interstate, you have options, just not P&G. Go to cleanmpg for more info

I also think hypermiling is massively annoying. Go the speed limit, stay at it and don't congest traffic with another deviant form of driving.
i've been hypermiling for years. i averaged 56% over EPA in my old integra GSR over it's life
i flat out do NOT hypermile on the highway

The traffic thing is true too. It'll frustrate the person behind you because they keep slowing down and speeding up as you are.
just to clarify my assumptions... hypermiling involves many techniques.... many of those techniques DO NOT REQUIRE that you vary your speed or deviate from the speed limit. so dont generalize here. if you have been hypermiling for years then what is wrong with driving under load, having tires inflated to max-sidewall+, etc???

I've been able to consistently get 30mpg in my Subaru Forester w/out using FAS or P&G, I do however coast in Neutral while on downhills but never ever ever turn the vehicle off. That's beyond retarded, you might burn .02 cents of fuel at idle over the course of xx amount of miles. Simply stay out of the 40+ % range for throttle, cruise at lower speeds on the highway, utilize downhills when you can w/out interfering with other traffic and keep those tires inflated.
I'm 100% convinced that when I actually do get my Fit I will be netting over 50mpg with my current driving techniques and like I said, I only use a few. It's just the ones I do use are the most important

The first thing I did when getting my Fit was I inflated the tires to 46mpg, they were only at 32. I've only driven it for a couple of days but the calculator on the dash says my avg mpg is 42.8! I couldn't be more happier and I know there are times when I wasn't paying attention as much as I should have been so it should only go up from there. I'm going to compare the calculator to actually dividing miles/gallons but I can't do that for the first tank, I have no idea how many gallons the dealer put in there. The needle was over the F mark.
It's amazing how much gas it saves just by pretending you have no brakes though. Apparently this big super duty F-250 got pissed off at me and blasted his horn at me when I was coasting to stop lights in the city but hey if he wants to keep his 9 mpg to gun it and then slam on his brakes at every light he can have at it. I just flipped him off.

Scary to think I could get to work for $14 round trip a day!!!
Now, I remember why I stopped posting here.....
vintagesierra - keep up the good work. You should really check out cleanmpg.com, we(me and the other FIT owners I am sure) would love to have your mpg records on sight. There is a wealth of supportive and helpful information over there.
