It's not me. I'm a click under 42 average. If you look at the log he got 56 on the last fill
An unreal 540 miles on 9.6 gal

I'd guess he had a toe hook he deployed on was pulled along

The point of the note was to show what a real stretch goal looked like and maybe see if the owner was lurking on here. I'd love to get some pointers

that's good. I think hypermiling is very boring, that's why I don't do it much but I still get 36-38mpg. My last tank got 37.70mpg. The only hypermiling that I do is I don't accelerate hard, I always shift before 3k rpm. Doing my normal speed between 60-70mph oh highway and that's about it.

Simply accelerating at a slower pace, and shifting no later than 3k RPM will give you some very surprising results. I'd be willing to bet you'd immediately get at least 35 MPG. Upping your tire pressure to max sidewall would help, too.

Try it and let us know.

I've heard that accelerating hard/quickly to your optimal cruising speed (55-60 max) can actually cancel out the extra fuel used because you will be at that optimal cruising speed getting max MPG slightly sooner. I usually hold third a little longer and skip fourth but IDK if or how much that helps, I just like saving a shift.

IMO the best way to increase MPG is to lower highway speeds and max your tire pressures. I just got my Fit (and consequently haven't burned a full tank yet) but was shocked to see that I'm at 3K RPM at 60MPH...is it even higher with 14" Base wheels? At 70+ you will be at insane RPMs and will pick up a ton more wind resistance.

That certainly increases fuel economy quite a bit to do those things.

Even those two modest changes in driving can see excellent results in fuel economy.

I'm going to have to renege on my first point - I did my first extended highway drive tonight and the RPMs don't actually make a huge jump from 60-70 but the increased wind resistance will still cause a noticeable efficiency drop.
