The Fit is ridiculously popular right now
So out here in California I know we pay more for gas than some other places (cheapest in town today is $4.19), but I was shocked by my dealership experience of the last couple days. Last night I drove by my local dealer and found six Fits parked right out front
1 - Sport Auto Blackberry
1 - Sport Auto Vivid Blue
1 - Base Auto Vivid Blue
1 - Sport 5-speed Storm Silver
2 - Base 5-speed Storm Silvers
Decided to go back at some point today and look at them. While I was out driving near the dealership earlier in the day, one of the Base 5-speed Storms went by on a test drive. Then I stopped by and found the 5-speed Sport Storm was gone already, the Vivid Blue sport auto was being handed over to the new owners when I pulled up, and there was a tidewater sport parked next to it that someone was inside doing the paperwork on. Now this is a small town dealership, and they moved at least three Fits today that I know of, while it seems everything else is just sitting there. They did mention that their stock of civics is pretty low at the moment too, but I've never seen so many of one model disappearing that fast, and I've bought eight vehicles new from dealerships before.
Then again, I also picked up a consumer reports mini-mag at Costco today about fuel efficient cars, and the Fit was at the top of their $ per mpg comparing the MSRP of various vehicle with their mileage, and was also listed as the top subcompact vehicle for mileage. So I guess this shouldn't surprise me with gas being how it is.
The only problem is since my Storm Sport 5-speed was gone, I have to wait or pick something else (still working on getting my 3 sold anyways). Now my fiancee says NHBP looks best, and I agree, but having had a GTI that was black and trying to keep it clean for shows and stuff, I don't know if I can do it again.
I was also amused that I drove past the dealership with my sister earlier in the day and before I even said anything about the Fit she said "What are those cars? They look really cool." and I think she really liked the Blackberry they had sitting out there.

I think the Fit has always been pretty popular. It's on that fine line between common and not. There are too many Ford Focuses. There are not enough Toyota Yaris's - there are just the right amount of Fit's out there.
Yes, they're incredibly popular right now. I got a MR Sport manual a little over a month ago here in Vermont. I had to pay MSRP -- no haggling when they sell the things before they even arrive on the lot. That's what I did. Over the phone I learned that the closest Honda dealer to me (40 miles) had one coming in, and I put a deposit on it sight unseen. (I had test-driven a friend's '07 base, so I knew it was what I wanted.)
If you have your heart set on one particular style and color, you could call around to different dealers and maybe find what you're looking for. And if you do find it, don't hesitate. I'd drive several hundred miles to a dealer if necessary -- remember, you'll probably have the car for some years, and any Honda dealer will do your warranty work (if needed). Good luck!

The other day I took my Accord to my local dealer to have the oil changed, (they sent me a coupon), and I noticed that there was not one Fit in the showroom or on the lot. I looked on their internet site and discovered that they had five in stock. You may want to go to the internet sites of all of the Honda dealers in your area and search their new car lists. Then give them a call and find out if any on the list are not already sold. Our dealer kept my wife's Fit listed on their internet inventory until I took delivery of the car.
Also, be aware that the dealers may either be charging a premium above the sticker price, or they are adding expensive dealer options that you certainly don't need or want. Some of these are, pin stripes, paint sealant (expensive wax job), fabric protection (expensive Scotch Guard spray), floor mats (can be purchased over the internet for less), or extended warranties (generally not needed or can be purchased for less on the internet).
Good Luck!

A few houses over, a neighbor bought a purple 2008 sport fit. I wonder if they know I have a red fit of my own.

Only problem is, is that it isn't the top subcompact vehicle for mileage.
The Toyota Yaris is.
Yaris MT = 29/36
Fit MT = 28/34
And as far as the msrp comparisons, I'm not sure what they're doing but the Yaris is also cheaper.
A base 2 door hatch is cheaper. BUT if you get a loaded S sedan expect to spend over 17,000. Toyota doesn't include antilock brakes as standard equipment, you have to buy it, along with other things. My brother owns a Yaris S with everything, could have almost bought a Civic EX.

A base sedan isn't much more than a base liftback. But yeah, I wouldn't get a totally loaded S-sedan anyway. The best value is to keep it under $15K.
Good that the Fit is catching in most places.
I was in Maui last weekend and paid $4.35/gal for regular. I noticed absolutely no Fits, just a lot of V6 rentals (Mustang, Pontiac G6, Charger, etc) and offroad trucks. On my home island of Oahu the Fit is getting more and more popular....good, but I don't feel as special anymore

One or two mpg is essentially meaningless. Your gas mileage will depend much more on how you drive the vehicle.
'08 Yaris doesn't have side curtain airbags. I rented one last summer in Iceland, and its interior space is way less than a Fit's -- my wife and I couldn't get both our bags into the trunk and had to set one on the back seat. I think there's no comparison -- the Fit is far and away the superior car.
