Question Roof rack anyone?

I just purchased my Fit 4 weeks ago. I bought it to replace my Subaru (that I hate ) to deliver mail. I love the Fit but I really need a roof rack for it. We took it camping this weekend,5 pillows, 4 people, 1 small dog, 2 tents 1 cooler, 3 fishing rods and all the gear for the over night. I really miss being able to put the bulky light weight stuff on the roof (pillows and blankets). Does anybody have an all purpose roof rack that they like for the Fit? By the way even with it loaded with all that stuff I got 28-29 mpg and I have an automatic.

roof rack is ~$400 and will decrease your mileage. a hitch + rack won't effect your mileage adn is MUCH cheaper. $80 for the hitch and choose the rack you want

Installed the Yakima 42" Rails (also towers/crossbars), just used it this weekend for its first real test. Loaded up with all our gear for camping, interior was filled with large part of backseat folded flat (2 adults 1 child) and up top all the lighter bulky stuff (pillows, chairs, grill, gas tanks, tarp, sleeping bags).

what you pick will be on preference...
How often are you going to put it on and off...
How important is convience of putting it on and off...

48" Yakima Crossbars ~$60
then you need either
A set of 4 Q-Towers and matching clips for the Fit is about $205
or
42" rail, 2 pairs of Landing Pad#1, and set of 4 control towers at about $240 and about 3-4hrs labor to install the rails (or you can do it yourself)

Also Thule has setups comparable in function and price, although yakima seems to be the easier to put on and off. But there are plenty of folks that use the Thule as well.

I put the rail system in because I didn't want them roof rack on there most of the time and wanted easy on and off when I want to use it. Plus you can usually find the stuff cheaper than retail (REI has 20% sales once or twice a year...thats when I bought mine, and others regularly have 10% or more off)

I just put a yakima rack on this past weekend. One place to look is see if you can dig up some local mountain bike/snowboard/kayak forums. A lot of times they'll have used racks on there for cheap. I picked up my whole rack for $70. Either Thule or Yakima are great and I wouldN'T worry about getting a used vs new.

until i put something on here i'm going to have to pack like a back packer i guess. packing lite would be really good for the gas milage too probably. i'm definately going to check out those two racks though. Thanks

Ah, haven't seen much of those around here. I know a guy who has a Fluid but that's the only one.

Talking

well i broke down and purchased and installed the Thule rack on my Fit today. $279 ( new from REI ) and 1.5hrs install time and i am ready to go. we are going almost 5oo miles with 2 adults and 2 kids in the car so everybit of space i can gain will be useful. Thanks to all who responded. i am going to use the cargo bag i already own with my new rails.

There are many many posts on this site including best buys, mpg results and beefed suspension recommendations. Search 'roof rack'.

STREETURCHIN - do you have a regular photo of your Fit with the rack instead of that purple photo? I'm looking to get one and would like to see what yours looks like.

I live in Howell, Mi and when I visit my folks across the state I seen a couple of Fit drivers with a roof rack. Funny thing was both of them were over 65 years old.
