MPG skyrockets after first oil change...

So my Fit is about 5.5 mos old, with about 4700 miles on it. Just last week was my first oil change.

Before the oil change, it was getting really sh**y gas milage in the city. Highway was ok, but I never got more than 250 miles per tank.

I got the oil change last thursday about noon. I filled up the same day at about 5:30. I alway reset the trip odometer when I fill up. I went about 75-80 miles before the gas needle even moved. I have gone 185 miles, and still have over 3/4 of a tank.

I am super excited.

As a side note, I went to a gas station that I don't normally go to. It was a BP, and they have a new additive called Invigorate. IDK if that is what did it, but I am really stoked. Normally I got to a BP, but this was not my usual gas station, So I don't think that is a factor.

Also, I have not changed my driving style at all.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that ALL of this tank so far has been city driving. Constant stop and go. Max speed of 45 mph.

That is GREAT to hear from another 08 VBP owner. I only have 1200 on my Fit and it looks like I'm getting about 30 mpg highway

Keep us posted. If you two great tanks, something is going well for sure. Being that you did at least 2 things, oil change and diff gas, it's hard to Say whats going on.

lol, it would be cool to keep up that mileage and make 750+ miles on a tank.

Most gas stations have some type of gimmick additive these days, Irving has one, shell v-power, mobile has one too... There's no way to prove if there is actually any difference because no one is going to do a real controlled experiment so I wouldn't let it alter your fuel choice.

Anyways... Yea usually the first few thousand miles your engine is run there's some wear that takes place to break it in and the oil becomes full of microscopic particles. Change your oil every 5000 miles with a full synthetic (I choose royal purple, because in test where the engine is beat on and taken apart, RP beat everyone by a LOT!.. in terms of wear) and it will keep your engine better lubricated... which means less friction, which means better MPG's!

I never thought i would own a non-premium car, but im almost done college and money is getting tight with these fuel prices... and saab repair bills! lol

Exactly. I don't want to be a debbie downer, but the angle of the car and speed of fill (amount of foam generated) can be the difference between 50 and 150 miles before the needle moves.

I'd gather data for 3 tanks or so before drawing any conclusions.

Well, I wish I had good news, but I don't.

I am approaching my next oil change, I just hit 7800 mi yesterday. I plan on changing it sometime this month before it gets any colder.

For a while, I was getting about 450 miles/tank. Most of my driving is Interstate, going about 80-90 mph. (yeah, I know it would be better if I slow down, but i dont wanna!)

But lately, its gone down to about 275 mi/tank. Although, I've been doing significantly more stop and go city driving lately.

Since the day I got it, the tire pressure has been set at 40psi on all 4. I check them about twice a month, unless the tpms freaks out. Its only done that once, it froze that night.

Also, I always use 89 octane gas w/ 10% ethanol. Around here, its about $0.10/gal cheaper than anything else.

I am getting ready for a road trip this weekend, and I'm gonna use pure gas (87 octane around here), and see what kind of difference it makes. Now that 100% gas is actually a decent price I can actually afford to

I waited until around 7000 miles when I got my first oil change, and after that occurred, my gas mileage did go up. I usually go around a week between fill-ups. Last week, I drove 258 miles and my fuel light was close to illuminating. My average that week was 29 MPG, which includes city streets, freeways, traffic, normal driving, and jackrabbit starts. I even tend to use my cruise control on city streets is traffic is not too bad.

I too use my cruise in the city when appropriate. It does help mpg!

And it also helps me not speed!

I got my oil changed last week at about 5400 miles ( I could not let it go anymore as it was driving me crazy). I'll have to see how the mileage is now. I can't complain as I have gotten as much as 365 miles on one tank mainly highway driving. Around town I can get to about 315-320.

I've been getting between 36 and 39 mpg with 80% city/20% Interstate driving.

But one time I was filling up at BP and mileage went waaay down. Strange thing is, lots of other people I talked to, including my husband, experienced the same thing - they all had used BP fuel. We switched to Sunoco now, looks better already!

Damn man... I get something like 450km with a full tank in city... maybe because it's not broken-in yet i guess...
