Playing a USB -- song order & display questions

When testing out the USB function on a Fit I noticed that it scrambles the order of the songs in an album. I had each file's ID3 Tag data fully filled out yet the Fit went by folder/file name. I had the individual song files named "song name (1)" "song name (2)" "song name (3)" etc through "song name (12)". The Fit placed the songs in this order:

1-10-11-12-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9

Is there a way to get the song order correct? Or a way to get the Fit to only go by the ID3 Tag data (ie, NOT the file name)? I know I can press TITLE until I see TRACK but I want the Fit to automatically only display ID3 Tag data without my having to press a button.

As a compromise how can I get the song order to display correctly using the Folder name display?

Playback Sequence

I posted this last night in the 2nd Generation forum;

XP Copy Sequence V.S. Fit Play Sequence
My first USB experience in the Fit was with a 5.5G iPod. Sorted alphabetically by artist, alphabetically by album, then correct track sequence within the album. No worries.

Next, I picked up an 8GB flash drive, to try that out.

With a capacity of a fraction of my mp3 library, I would have to be selective. I chose (almost) all albums by four favorite (favourite, for y'all up North) artists.

In Windows XP-MCE, I copied all albums by one artist, then all albums by the next, etc.

When copying was in progress, I noticed the albums (folders) were copied in reverse alphabetical order, I.E. Rolling Stones copied 'Voodoo Lounge' first, 'Black and Blue' last.

It was not immediately apparent which track within the album copied first.

My top-level folders were artist; Beatles, Elton, Jimmy (Buffett), Rolling (Stones).

Flash card in the Fit, my 'Artist' folders don't show up. The first folder is 'Yellow Submarine' which is the last (alphabetically) and first copied of the first artist copied.

Abbey Road (Beatles) is followed immediately by Victim of Love (Elton).

Tracks within each album are played alphabetically. I originally thought they might be played in sequence by date/time copied, but I found an album which showed otherwise. Mine, at least, are played alphabetically by file (track) name.

jamtrino,

So far, the only way I can see to play the tracks in the same sequence as the album is for the track filename to start with a two digit number (01, 02,...). Not really something I want to do.

+1 Rep for a pertinent question!

I can live with a "two digit" number. Major pain to have to go through and rename everything, but at least it will play sequentially. Thanks!!

Too bad the Fit can't rely on the ID3 tag data.

There should be a way to do a batch file rename. I think iTunes does it when you select the option to "Manage my music", or something like that.

My first mp3 player was by Creative, and the software for it automatically numbered each file. When I switched to an iPod, the numbers made it very difficult to search for a song by title. I re-ripped my entire library to remove the numbers.

I wish I could plug a USB cable into the fit for a firmware update!

Is that alphabetical by file name?

No. I had the ID3 tag filled out but named each individual song file by the album name followed by a number in parenthesis. For example, album name = Blackberry Belle. Here is what my files looked like inside a folder that was named Blackberry Belle:

Blackberry Belle (1), Blackberry Belle (2), Blackberry Belle (3), . . . Blackberry Belle (12).

After "Blackberry Belle (" the first thing in the filename to sort by is the first digit, then the second. That gives you your sequence of 1, 10, 11, 12, 2.

Two digits would fix that (01, 02, 03). Makes sense to me, anyway.

This from the Cnet review:
We quickly found the USB connector in the upper glovebox (yes, there is also a lower glovebox), which works for USB drives and iPods. But it took us awhile to figure out how to find music on a connected iPod. We came very close to actually consulting the manual, until we found we could change from Playlist to Album, Artist, and Genre selection by pressing down on the big volume knob on the car's instrument panel. With a list of artists displayed, for example, the volume knob suddenly worked as a selection knob, scrolling through artist names. There is also a single-disc slot with a player that can read MP3 CDs, but as usual, we found the USB port more generally useful.

I'm using a 4GB flash drive w/folders copied from eMusic. I use the up/down buttons and the center button for navigating through 50 folders.

Hope this helps y'all.

Yes, the menu navigation when connected to an iPod is similar to that on the iPod, except the loss of the quick-scroll function.

The concern expressed by the OP, and observed myself, is that tracks within an album (folder) on a flash drive do not play in the track sequence of the embedded ID3 tag information. It seems to simply sort alphabetically by file name. Is that how yours works?

I've got the 09 Fit with the sound system that has the iPod interface.
Can anyone please confirm if yours has or not the "Genre" function on the iPod selection list?

Mine has got only by Playlist, Artist, Album and Song....

Best regards and happy new year to everyone!

PO.

i have an 09 fit and i'm experiencing much confusion with this sorting. i managed to get the tracks to display in the correct order after renaming each of them 01, 02, etc. no names, just numbers. so i just use the track (tag) for titles. it's kind of a bummer, but no big deal.
but i cannot seem to get the folders to display in any kind of organized fashion. i know subfolders are not an option, so i'd at least like it if i can get them all in order by artist. so, alphabetically my library would be something like this:
acid king: III
acid king: acid king
acid king: Busse Woods
atomic bitchwax: III
atomic bitchwax: atomic bitchwax
atomic bitchwax: spit blood
clutch: clutch
clutch: from baele st.
clutch: jam room

get it? i have it ordered like this on my USB drive, but when plugged in to my fit, they come up seemingly randomly. some of them are in order, some not so much. i read somewhere (i think another thread on this forum, possibly in this thread somewhere) that it orders them by the date/time they were added to the drive. that would be a serious pain. i'd have to re-add every album in that specific order. then if i ever wanted to add an album it would be an equally tremendous headache.

any advice/input?

thanks.
randy

Hi Randy!

I've also tried everything and the only consistent solution that works is one already posted here before, which is to put all files in a .zip archive, sort then by name, and extract then to the pendrive. Looks like the WinZip saves the files using the sorted order and this makes the same order to be "understood" by the Fit CD-Player.

Did you have the chance to test it with an iPod ?
Does your menu shows the "Genre" option?

Best regards,

PO.

I just researched this and here is the solution! You can use a tool to resort the songs by file name - of course they need to be in alphabetical order with the correct numbered sequence. It has to do with the fat file time stamp and nothing to do with ID3 tags. This is why the zip trick works too.

If I sort using filenumber and name (and the tools provided), then it works but the track number appearsd now twice... once added by the FIT, and the other the intrinsic number on the filnename, sucha s this: 03:03-track.mp3

I had initially thought that the fit was reading my Sansa Fuze alphabetically, but that was not the case since the first track it played in one folder started with a T. It's also not dependent on number if your track file name begins with a number. What I have found is that it plays the the tracks in the order you saved them to the folder and it also numbers the folders in the order you saved them to the player or usb drive. I did try saving several folders in the order that I wanted them (alphabetically) but for some reason that didn't only worked for some folders and not the rest. I'll probably fiddle around with it a bit more to figure out why, but thus far I have confirmed that at least for the 2009 Fit and a Sansa Fuze, the track order in a folder is dependent on the order they are saved to the folder. If anyone else has any feedback on this please let me know.

I'll also add that I loaded the folders using Ubuntu Linux. I had also saved files to the player using Windows XP. I could play all files on the player but when I plugged it in to the Fit, the Fit read only the folders saved to the player using Ubuntu.

I ripped all my CD's using WMP, then synced them to my USB drive rather than just copying the folders. All tracks play in the proper sequence for me.

In my experience, yes: the Fit HU works on Artist folder > Album folder > track filename, not on embedded ID3 tagging. Example:

The Chieftains
> San Patricio
> Santiago
> The Long Black Veil
>> 01 Mo Ghile Mear.m4a
>> 02 The Long Black Veil.m4a
>> etc.

I made a straight file copy from my iTunes Library to an 8gb USB flash drive; within each album folder, tracks were already numbered 01, 02, 03, etc. The only added work I had to do was to delete manually the hidden . files created by MacOS (if not deleted, the HU displays these as "unplayable").

I normally play the USB in the car in F-RDM mode, and rarely look for a specific album, let alone for a specific track; If I don't care for a particular album at a particular time, I just hit the top button to advance to the next album.

Any interaction more than this diverts more attention from driving than I am willing to spare in the interest of safety. I am one of those people who believes it is impossible to multitask without sacrificing competence, and I try to do so as little as possible.
