Tinted License plate covers?...

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if anyone is using them, and if the cops are handing out tickets for them. I have a black 09 fit, and just got the windows tinted. I bought a tinted cover for the plate, and put it on (haven't driven with it yet.) I'm thinking it looks awesome, but... probably too dark and might make me look suspicious. I'm going to take it off until I hear if others are running them. I had one when I had an 02 wrx. Had it on for years, then one day I got a fix it ticket for it. certainly wasn't a regular issue. Do you think the Plate + windows being tinted = too much police attention?

Thanks!!
Brian

Do you really want a cop having a reason to pull you over? Getting a ticket for something so minor is not worth the trouble. While the cop has you pulled over, he says I will give you a pass on the plate cover BUT you are getting a ticket for the tinted windows.....or visa versa. The cop was behind you, did not know you had the tint, now he has all the more reason to give you grief. Why not just put a "Cops eat ass" sticker on the rear window? I am sure they will not notice it at all.

When in doubt, throw it out.

Were running a light blue tinted license plate cover on the family car here and so far we haven't been pulled over for having it. But the laws in your state might be different from here when regarding license plate covers. I'd check out the DMV site to find the info your looking for.

i agree, they dont prevent you from gettin tickets and will definatly grab the attention of a police. i was watching myth busters and they were testing if theres anything that could prevent a speed camera capture. they tried sprays, film, cover, alot other stuff, no beat. the only thing that beat it was speed, with one of those rocket drag cars, yes i said it, rocket. not engine if you want a black look on those plates, go custom, im sure theres sum plates out there that have sum black on it.

Dang! I hate common sense!!!! ha ha... thanks for your input guys! I think I'm going to follow your advice, and the little voice that has been in the back of my head since the moment I held my plate behind it and saw how dark it was. Maybe I'll just pop it on there when I want to take photos of the car just to dark the white Michigan plate.

Yeah, they really don't do anything other than tone down the plate against the black paint. Total vanity un-necessity. If I didn't have the window tint, maybe I'd risk it until getting a fix-it-ticket, but, totally not worth having a cop pick me apart once he's got me stopped. I'd much rather have the tint (35% front 17% rear) than the Plate cover.

Thanks again everyone for being the voices of reason!!

I've had a tinted plate cover on my cars for 3+ years with no problems at all. I've even been pulled over for other things with the cover on and they've said nothing. It's obviously not dark enough that you can't see through it but it is visibly dark. If you think it looks good leave it on.

I like the bumper sticker suggestion.
Someone around here has a bumper sticker that says,
"Avoid Hangovers - Stay Drunk!" on it. I personally think I'd be more inclined to have a Mothers Against Drunk Driving sticker or something.

So yeah, no sense drawing attention from the Boys. Use the cover for photos like you said, or put it on at Fit meets, but not for general use. Plus, most cars with those covers look kinda ricey, IMO. I'd say find a sharp-looking tag frame instead.

The Fit's do not take to the tinted plates all that well. There's tons of space behind the plate that allows some light to sneak in.

Here's the same cover on the front of my old Civic. I had one on the rear as well and it was just as dark. Yes there is a license plate on that front bracket :P.

Here is the same cover on the Fit, during the day with light behind it:

It's not that dark, the only time it's really hard to see it is if you're at a rather large angle to it. Like I said I've had that same plate cover on my cars for over 3 years with no problems at all. Maybe CT cops are more lax on it, but I think you'll be fine putting it on.

That cover looks just like the one I had on my wrx. Was fine for years until one day, a cop must've been bored and decided to get me for it. The one I just bought seems to be darker than that one and the one i used to have. I was surprised by how dark it was when I put my plate behind it. I've got a flat one, not a dome style one, not that it makes much difference. Thanks for posting the pics. I think for now I'm going to go coverless. I've got too many points right now courtesy of my old wrx. I'm trying to stay under the radar.

cheers!

linus011 and others:

Can you tell me where you purchased your tinted license plate holder?
I'd like to get one for my fit and haven't had any luck searching the net to find a place to purchase.

Thanks a lot!
