The Fit 40yrs from now
The Fit 40yrs from now
I recently had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine. He's a big VW enthusiast and recently purchased a '63 Bug. I was helping him tear everything out of the inside and as I commented on the dry-rotted/brittle upholstery he asked me "What do you think your Fit's going to be like in 40 years?"
I often wonder how my GD3 that I traded in is being treated since it was my first new car. That was only 4-5 months ago. I can't even imagine 40yrs!
My friend commented "You never know. People could end up collecting and restoring old Fits like they do Bugs now." Of course, he also had to mention how great the Bug is since it's so easy to work on and how durable it is (except that there's a hole in the floor and the engine needs to be rebuilt).
What does everyone think? In 40yrs, will there be people restoring GD3s?

I bought this honda counting on that exact thing. I mean look at the example of the original honda civics. Finding a mint condition 92 Honda civic SI with low miles, no rust and perfect interior would make me stand at attention for hours. I foresee a future where people like us have the money and restored numbers matching classic honda's fetch as much money as numbers matching hemi cudas do with our parents generation.

I had a 83 civic s for about 6 months, bright red, got it because I had a 83 944 on order and they were saying I wouldnt get it as Porsche was just about sold out. But an order cancelled and.........I got it!
Specs on the 83 944 are amazingly like an 09 Fit.
$18450.00, 8.7 0-60 and 16.7 in the quarter.

this is probably an indication of what the Fit will be like in 40 yrs:

^ I love wagovans. I'm thinking about picking one up as a fun/errand runner. I can't decide between getting the RT4WD or the standard FWD. AWD would be fun, but I could swap a B16 into the FWD... though i'm thinking about moving the the pacific northwest where AWD would be handy.
I often think about where cars we have now will be in 40 years. But restoring an older car seems easier as the internals and mechanics are much more primitive. Think about all the stuff we have to have a dealer do for us now. Imagine when the technology is so advanced. Finding the tools and hard drives and computers will be nearly impossible to restore a junked Fit in 2049.
maybe it will be like star-trek and we will be able to "replicate" the parts we need hahaahaha in reality im sure there will be companies that will make reproduction parts, like they do now for vintage cars.... i mean in 40 years all those electronics will be so easy to duplicate, kids will probably do it as a science fair project in elementary school....
The future restorability of the Fit requires a two important things that I think the car has going for it. One is interest, the other is availabilty of parts. In order for a car to be considered restorable, it has to be desirable enough to warrant support from parts vendors. The 32 Ford is an example of how a desirable car can be supported by the reproduction parts market. You can build yourself a brand new 32 Ford out a catalog without a single original part. By contrast look at the AMC Pacer, a horrible turd of a car that enjoys a rabid cult following. Unlike the 32 Ford the Pacer has literally no support in terms of parts available. Therefore most folks restomod their Pacers to some degree or another (I've seen one with a 4.0 straight six out of a late model Cherokee) The structure and drivetrain of the Fit should have no trouble going forty years, And as modern cars go, its fairly light on techno-crap. Imagine trying to restore a Lexus LX460 with radar park-assist!
