I'm so pissed!!

I took my wife and MIL to the movies last night and chose a relatively smart place to park the Fit - or so I thought. I didn't park in the middle of nowhere nor did I take up two parking spots as to not attract attention to my new car. I just parked amongst the rest of the cars and yet some punk decided that I needed to have my front passenger side window smashed out!

That SOB is lucky I will never know who it was (there was no security camera) because otherwise he'd be given a harsh and manly lesson on how to respect other people's property!!

All this before I've even made my 1st car payment!!

One should never touch another person's anything! And if one must touch somebody else's property, be man enough to do it in front of the owner!

And the sad part is I have to feel thankful that only the glass was damaged and the body and interior was left un-harmed

Sorry to hear about this. At least it was only the window, and no one in your family was hurt. I also agree, don't mess with another person's car, house, etc.

so he smashed the window.. did he steal anything (or seemingly attempt to steal something (i.e. something inside the car make it look like he was trying to remove it, or steal the car itself, but fail?)

odd for a smashed window but no other reason...

Whoa! That is nuts.

I wouldn't be so sure it was regular automobile vandalism, but perhaps more of that alcohol- and testosterone-induced "I gotta punch something" guy-thing that happens more often on weekend nights.

Maybe we need to add some "Pissed off? Punch here!" punching bags.

I'm glad that the car wasn't totally messed up. That the car wasn't stolen. That it wasn't otherwise damaged. Relatively speaking, the window is easy to replace.

I had my former car broken into, and they stole the stereo and all kinds of stuff I had in the glove compartment. But they did NOT mess up the car. No keys on the paint. No slashing seats. Not even broken windows. I figure they must have been really desperate because it was a crap stereo.

What should you keep in your car? Nothing of value. NOTHING OF VALUE.

My insurance and registration are NOT in the car, they are in my hand bag.

So, be angry, yet thankful. You could still drive home. The window wasn't broken on a rainy night when you were parked outside. They didn't leave your interior light on, draining the battery. And while you could have caught them in the act, "thug edumacation" has no effect on most fellas who are under the influence. Or who have a knife or gun.

You can consider pager alarms. It might have been an oddity, or it might have been part of a trend. Glass-sensitive alarms. Stuff like that.

Check also this thread, for some ideas I had:

How quickly do you think someone would back away from a vehicle if it seemed like their photo had just been taken?

I haven't had the car enough time to accumulate anything of value - so nothing was touched inside. There was another woman whose minivan got its window busted too and the van was full of bags as she just finished shopping, and nothing was touched either.

They were just breaking glass to break glass........

Damn, sorry to hear. not sure why people do things like this. Bad karma always catches up to everyone and bites them in the arse.

When I saw MIL I thought you were biotching about a Malfunction Indicator Light...

Damn, that sucks. I hope you and/or the lady called the cops to have a report filed. You should also notify the theater's management. It's about all you can do, officially. The report might help insurance-wise, and notifying management may be incentive enough for parking lot security cams. Technically, this is a crime that occurred on their property, involving damage/loss of property. Believe me, they KNOW all about liability, and are aware of your right to file civil suit. Not sayin you should, just sayin you could.
