Air bags sleeping ?

Do you think the air bags can deploy if a car hit the front bumper (over 50 km/h) even if the key is not in the ignition ?

My dealer told me that the car is total loss if the airbags are out.

NOt completely true, sure while by them exploding does cause a hell of a mess, it's very common for body shops to replace them on new cars aslong as teh damage doesn't excede the value of the car.

but I'm being told that it cost about 5000$ to replace each ones (or both). So it's cheaper to scrap.

i doubt it's taht much, most air bags run between $500.00 to roughly around $1000.00, best bet is to call honda and just ge ta price on them, i know 100% it doesn't cost taht much per bag.

In sleep mode the driver's side air bag is always engaged... There is no way to disable the driver's air bag unless you have the SRS light on. This is done by taking out the steering wheel or front seats...

I think you didn't understand my question... If I'm not in the car and the key is not in the ignition, is the airbags are still waiting or sleeping ?

i would say no, since the seats should have weight sensors, atleast for the side airbags, but not sure about the frontal bags or side curtains, but since the seat weight sensor's tell teh SRS Unit that there is someone there or not might mean it won't if no one is there.

Agree, call the parts department for the most accurate answer.

Here is a link to a place that sells bags, but obviously the Fit isn't included..

http://airbagdepot.com/civic?b=1

Looks like less than $500 a pop..

I really doubt the airbags will go off in a car thats not running. Doesn't make much sense.

Do you plan on sleeping on the side of the freeway?

Sure, that's what refresh mode is for! No, I don't wanna, but I was trying to come up with some example that related back to the original post. Side of the road waiting for the wrecker? Changing a tire with the rest of the family in the car? (I know, it's a Honda and will never break...)
