Unexpected Bonus From Fit Purchase
Some things I expected after comparing to the competition, like the genius seats, 5 speed auto, and 5 star crash rating. I was dreading calling my insurance company thinking that my rates would double from my '98 Corolla.
I could not have been MORE WRONG! My rates only went up $120 PER YEAR!!!
How great is that?
Any unexpected bonus for you?

I was getting 28-30mpg with the Corolla. It had 88,000 mi. on it. I have 340 mi. on the Fit. I took delivery at 224 mi. Temps here have been below freezing, sometimes in the single digits, since I took delivery on 12/10. I have not yet gone through a full tank of gas. My mpg readout says I'm getting 20.4 mpg. I am warming up the engine till the cold indicator like goes out, and my commute is about a mile. Pretty much worst case scenario as far as mpg is concerned. Thanks to the excellent information on this forum, I am anticipating significant improvement once break in has occurred. Come spring, I'll be making some road trips. Looking forward to that as driving the Corolla was not nearly the enjoyable experience as driving the Fit is.

And then of course one wants to overcome that later by driving carefully, but when doing a lot of warming up while standing it really does handicap your mpg ratings!
Yeah, i was pleasantly surprised when I got my new insurance quote and it was $33 a year CHEAPER than my 04' Sentra. Granted, I have no accidents, no moving violations and I'm now considered an "adult driver" - but still not bad.
I'm wondering why the insurance rates are so good for the Fit. I have the Sport. Does the base model have the alarm? Is it the 5 star crash rating? Does anyone know for sure? I did a search but could not find any info. Should I start a new thread with insurance in the title? It would seem to me that this would be a worthy discussion point WRT advantages to Fit ownership.
I don't think that the fit insurance is that low really. I was paying $88 for full coverage i now pay $100 a month for a S2000CR. So to go from a fit to a sports car im suprised the fit insurance is not lower
Here in BC Canada I pay less for my Fit than any other car I have had, which included an S2000, a few civics/crx's and a couple 4x4 SUV's. $1100 cdn/year full coverage. We also get a $1000 Eco Relief from the Provicial government for buying a "enviro friendly" car. Many advantages other than a great product, also peace of mind and easy on the pocketbook!
Probably the best perk of having a Fit is theres so much practicality in the car. I can use it to haul parts, wheels, tires, tools - and 4 people. I normally used to take my buddies truck to the shooting range, but now we take my Fit - theres more secure room in the back, and we can still fit our target stands in the back.
Additionally, my Fit is going to end up as my "practial car".

I had a '02 Dodge Neon 5 spd and traded for a '09 Fit Sport 5 spd. My insurance rates dropped $300/yr. Around here, the Neon is considered a "high risk" vehicle to insure because so many kids drive them.
My '98 Acura TL (130K+ miles) needed a couple things fixed for about $1200 - so that pushed me over the edge to buy a New '09 Fit Sport AT this week. Here's the pros for me:
1.) Low insurance costs, just $60 / year more than the old car
2.) Much better fuel economy with regular fuel instead of premium
3.) I have room to carry larger items
4.) My head doesn't rub against the roof when I'm driving
5.) Plenty more good things too, $17K isn't bad for a new car with the stuff that comes on this model and Honda reliability. I couldn't do a Kia or Hyundai - that's just wrong.

Insuring the Fit caused my rates to go down, but what really helped was getting married, turning 25, and getting the house insured with the same company, as well as adding the wife's car to get all of the multi-line discounts.
I was also driving a 2004 STi before, and that car is just plain expensive to insure. I think after all of the discounts and the cheaper insurance for the Fit, it cost as much to insure both the Fit and the Wife's Civic with higher coverage and lower deductibles, as it was to insure just the STi with lower coverage and higher deductibles.

Unexpected Insurance savings, agreed.
I noticed that my insurance went down when I bought my first Avalon, it dropped even more on the second Avalon, which had a factory installed anti-theft system. My 2010 Fit Sport has the anti-theft and a bundle of airbags, more than either Avalon. Guess what the insurance is lower too.
