got mine on cash for clunkers ($4000), plus had money saved ($4000). $8000 down payment on a $16k car is half, im ok with that. payment is $180 a month.

The more money you put down, the better your interest rate will be. Also, are you putting more into maintenance of your car than you would be putting into payment of a new car?

I'd buy a slightly used GD3 with low miles and pay cash for it. Stay out of debt if you possibly can. The new Fits are not as cute as the original design. They have more useful features, but the older model is more mod-friendly and I think, fits younger people better. I've seen so many old farts in 2009 Fits! Gah!

well, stopped by the dealership today to check out the SSM they had. it had a bunch of scratches on the exterior of the car, and a little ding on the hood. i also noticed that it looked like the previous owner let their canine chew on the e brake.. they want 13,900.

the worst part was that i stood around for like 15 minutes, didnt get any help, looked through the window at the salesman who looked at me and turned away. by the time i got inside he was at his desk and he had his feet up. i asked him for some info on the "08 silver honda fit". he asked which one.. wtf.. as far as i know theres only one on the lot, what a dick. i guess ill need to take a trip up to miami one day...

Your dealer experience sucked, huh?
Go to Miami where they actually have to compete (if you are going to use a dealer at all). If going used, you could look at private party sellers (even ebay) and use E-Loan (although using a different name now). You can get pre-qualified and buy whatever car you want--dealer or private seller.

You have done your homework so you might consider looking into a private seller. At least then you'd negotiating with someone who is more likely to be a 'normal' person instead of a dealer shark. It's easy to diss dealers, but their reputation has been earned. There are decent dealers/salespeople out there but I think it's tougher to find ethical dealers when it comes to USED cars since there's so much more margin/money to be made and no real accountability to the manufacturer as they might have with new cars.

-Do as much work as you can via email--before you visit the dealer.
-Don't let them know you just drove all the way from the Conch Republic--then they'll have you by the balls.
-Do your homework on the buying process--especially if working with a dealer! See:CarBuyingTips.com new car buying guide, avoiding dealer scams, new cars, used car buying, selling

Good luck. Keep the 'Bu as a backup car if your job is less than stable--tourism suffers in this economy--beware.

I'm a 3x visitor to Key West--never rented a moped-- Drinkin + moped= ouch! Always wanted to rent one though...
I relied on Art from "Friendly Cab" for my transport--if you know him say High for me!

Good luck.

Used-car salesmen are the devil's possessions....You remind me how much I hate car shopping! If you can get a bank loan or a credit union loan, definitely go private, you'll get a better deal and a better car (the dealers get the worst cars). Don't let scratches put you off, well, it's better if the Fit is more cared for, but the paint scratches easily and hood chips are common. How many miles did it have on it? Probably pretty high or the owner would have sold it himself.

Don't get discouraged, you'll find the Fit you want! There was a time period where you couldn't even lay your hands on an '08 but I think the craze is about over and the people who might have paid primo for a slightly used Fit have all bought the '09s. Not that they will ever be cheap, but you can at least find a few to pick from.

im probably going to go to my credit union to see what kind of rates theyll give me seems how ive been banking with them for like 8 years now. when i test drove the ge8 in miami at largo honda they treated me very well, it may be due to the fact that there is competition in miami idk.. the main thing about getting the right fit for me is i would really prefer a manual and from what ive heard theyre kinda rare.

kawracer: millions of people drink and drive on mopeds down here and you very rarely have someone get seriously hurt, i have to admit ive done it myself on a rare occasion or two and nothing bad happened. although im not condoning it lol

Damn you! You are going to get me killed!

oh I know that folks do ride the mopeds and party--but I know myself enough to know I shouldn't--it enhances my partying experience to have the duty of driving/riding off my back. Plus riding a cab has it's own perks...
I hear ya tho--first time in KW I was too young, last time I was too old.

Fit is a great island car IMO--especially if you commute from another Key.

...and maybe we can do something about that signature of yours.

Good luck man I like your thinking, playing it tight and conservative with your finances.

STOP. Before doing anything else, read the complete Confessions of a Car Salesman series on Edmunds.com. With the internet, it's possible to do a lot of background investigative work toward finding a used or new car ahead of time. If you drive all the way up to Miami without preparation, they're going to think, "Well, here's an easy money concher who is going to be in a hurry to do a deal so that he can drive back home." The economy is still in the toilet, especially in Florida -- don't become shark bait.
