Can a non-Honda tire shop program your TPMS?

I just put a new set of wheels on my car and they reassured me that they could program the TPMS to my ECU which was cool because I live about 3 hours away from the nearest Honda dealership. When I arrived the guy told me when he had turned the key to sync the sensors and my ecu the light didn't come on and he just left it. 4 days later and the TPMS light came on and I'm wondering if this is their fault or can they only be programmed by Honda?

What that guy told you is wrong. The TPMS sensors must be recalibrated through the TPMS module by a TPMS tool and not through the ECU. The ECU receives the signal from the TPMS module and shows that TPMS light.

I'm guessing you bought new sensors for all the tires? If you did, all four sensors must be recalibrated and the TPMS module has to remember the new ID's of the new sensors. You would need to do this every time an old sensor is replaced. Take it to a Honda dealership and see if they will recalibrate it for you free of charge.

BTW is it the 'TPMS' sensor light on or '(!)'? If its the (!) just air up the tires, if not and its the 'TPMS', the sensors has to be recalibrated. I own a TPMS tool and its worth buying if you switch your wheels a lot.

I had my TPMS recalibrated when I had a tire changed with a new and different sensor. Honda charged me $110 for this. I recently had tires put on my other Fit at Town Fair Tire. They will do it for only $20. I watched the programming being done. They used a TPMS tool at the individual wheels and then programmed the information into the ECU with an OBD connection below the steering wheel. I would suggest you go to a tire store and skip Honda if they won't do it for free.
