Very few cars have rear side airbags. In fact, I dont think any Honda can be had with rear side airbags.

Be happy that most Hondas (including the Fit) have side curtains.

After looking at ratings of other cars, rear side airbags may have not necessarily increased the rear side impact rating. It's probably due to the body structure of the Fit.

It's really not that bad compared to many other cars. The Scion xB got 3/5 for FRONT side impact (no curtain or side airbags). It's mainly my wife and I that will be in the car, so 5/5 for all the front passengers is great.

Here's the breakdown for the ratings:
5 Stars = 10 percent or less chance of injury
4 Stars = 11-20 percent chance of injury
3 Stars = 21-35 percent chance of injury
2 Stars = 36-45 percent chance of injury
1 Star = 46 percent or greater chance of injury

Maybe, or maybe I just don't worry about it so much. I'd be fine with optional rear side-airbags as long as they weren't standard and didn't in any way compromise or increase costs for those who don't care about them. I'd gladly trade my front side airbags for a center console/armrest, dead pedal, and rear disc brakes. I just wish they were optional and you weren't forced to pay for them. Driver and passenger front airbags meet the government's requirements and meet my requirements. Everyone values different things about vehicles. For me, extra safety equipment isn't high on my list. If they added every extra safety feature they could, it would drive up the cost of the car alot.

My first car was a 1985 Honda Accord. It didn't have any airbags and I didn't feel in danger when I drove it. Any modern car that meets minimum government standards is probably alot safer than most cars from 20 years ago. The Fit more than meets my safety standards.

I drove cars with only lap/seat belts, no air bags. So I feel pretty good in the Fit!
