DIY Full Rear Cargo Mat

Here's another option for a rear cargo mat. I made a cargo mat out of a 4x8 foot gray foam anti-fatigue mat that I found at local discount store (for you in Ohio, it's Marc's). It works well. I used the full 4 foot width, and trimmed the length. I chose not to trim it to fit around the interior panels. Instead, it comes up the sides by the wheel housings a little which helps protect the plastic there. I also cut it about an inch big lengthwise so it forms a bit of a lip near the rear trim panels.

This would look better in black, but for under $14.00 gray is fine. The "boiler plate" pattern actually looks pretty good - sort of techno-industrial. The color is darker than than the flash makes it appear (see 4th photo taken without flash). You can see in the photos that it's already gotten some good scuffs from hauling a load of home renovation stuff.

My Fit is an '09, but I don't see why the same thing wouldn't work for any other hatchback. Also, notice my hillbilly seat covers, visible in the third photo. I just use black terry towels during the summer sweaty-muddy recreation season.

haha I thought the same thing when I saw the towels. Dad, is that you? (my dad is the ultimate "bargain" shopper, haha)

Good idea with the cover, especially if you're hauling stuff.

The towels are actually pretty practical if you get sweaty hiking as I like to do, along with windsurfing, kayaking and other wet sports. I can just toss the towels in the washer periodically. There's also zero worry about them interfering with the side airbags. But I have to admit, they look pretty hillbilly.

Hilbilly solutions, love it. Don't knock the towels_

Only real issue I have with is those flap things that cover the gap when the rear seats are dropped.
Really makes it difficult to simply slide large objects into the cargo area.
I'm almost thinking of cutting a piece of 1/4" lauan to lay in when the need exists. Not something to drive around with, however.

EDIT: Hey crash - like it or not we're all cheap. We bought FIT's.

I actually bought some Black Vinyl and Precision fit it to the rear hatch area and to the back of the seats. Looks pretty good. Has nice grooves in the event water were to hit it as well. Will take some pics when I get back from Vacation

My setup is also more permanent, where as this one looks like you can roll it out.

Hahaha thanks tyson87. Your comment got me laughing for a second.

To the OP, thanks for the DIY. That will be very useful someday. I will do that whenever I need it. +rep

I just came across this company that sells a precut mat made from a similar looking material. I guess I'm not the first one to think this would work.

Elemmat.com - Murdock Industrial Inc. - Honda Fit

Yeah, and at $120 I we know why they're selling them. You found the pot of gold. Thanks.

Found this same type of foam mat in black color at Sears. Current price is $19.99.

I've been eyeing one of those computer area plastic mats and then cut it to size and shape of the trunk floor. Problem is... as much as it protects, easy to slide things around and stays in place... the studs are to darn sharp for the weak base board.

LOL i'd rock a hello kitty printed ones
