3500 miles @ 40% oil life. Time to change the motor oil. What's a good motor oil brand to use?

I'm at 50% and 2480... I drive hard though lol.... Syntec or Mobile is our choice.

 

Not sure if you want to follow what Honda recommends, but they say not to change the oil until 5000 miles the first time. Just a heads-up

 

Actually, the dealer told me to change it when it hits 10%, which is when the maintenance reminder light comes on. Planning on using Syntec and Honda filter.

 

You make a good point, it might vary by car so you can't just go by mileage.

 

If you change the oil by yourself and not by the dealer, Does it cause agrevation with the warrenty??
I want to do my own oil changes. i have Honda filters and both 5w-20 oil and 5w-20 synthetic oil.

 

no it won't, just keep all your receipts and records, i think the manual states that too..

 

Mobil 1 for me.

Castrol Syntec maybe but I heard it is not
a true synthetic oil...

Honda original 0w20 is the best for saving fuel and gaining performance, and is recomended in europe. i tried 5w40 bit that was noticible in poor fuel economy and power.

 

my salesman actually told me to run the engine untill like 6300miles then change it becuase its got some special lubercant to help the engine break in.. then for like the first 2 changes use real oil non-synt and it will help the engine also so everything gets really well oiled.. anythoughts on this?

 

I have read that Honda initially fills the crankcase with a "High Moly" (Molybdenum diSulfide) oil formula which better protects the engine and reduces friction during break-in. If you change it too early you are throwing out that extra protection. For my first and other oil changes I plan to use a synthetic with high Moly because it also reduces friction and heat in the engine. I've read that it will improve your MPG by an average of 4.4%. For me that would take it from 36.2 MPG to 37.6. Not dramatic, but still some gas savings.

Does anyone know what Honda uses at their dealerships???? Sorry if its a dumb question, the last Honda I owned as a 93 Integra, but I changed the fluids myself!

 

It is a true synthetic, its a common misconception. IMHO, its better than Mobil1, especially the 0w30 GC.

 

im thinkin about using royal purple

 

If you ever watch powerblock TV on spike, the guys on horsepower TV changed all their fluids in a camaro SS with all royal purple fluids and actually gained 9hp.. thats pretty cool if you ask me

 

Read the "Service Manual".

Honda does recommend Castrol. They actualy built the whole engine on charasterics of this oil manufacturer.

So it shouldn't be wrong to put this oil into your engine.

Read the manual and to as it tells and you're engine will be fully satisfied.

BTW, putting better (read: high performance) oil is useless - just stick to the rocommended one.

P.S.: Honda engineers know what is the best (for their products) so I think we should trust them.
