First oil change at 5k? Huh?

First post by the way... great forum guys.

I purchased a new 2010 base model back in early June. My driving is mostly city/semi-urban commute and I've typically been getting around 29mpg. I've been very happy with every aspect of this great little car but one thing concerns me.

I'm currently just past 4500k on the odometer but my oil meter is already down to 30%. At this pace, I'm looking at an oil change in my first 5k which is not at all what I expected based on what the dealer told me and what the folks here seem to experience.

Can anyone shed some light on this situation?

Looking around further, maybe this is normal. For some reason I thought I remembered folks changing oil every 10k or so and I know my dealer said I should expect to hit that 15% number at around 8k.

Maybe this is as expected?

the meter takes into account your driving style.

if it says 30, yes youre nearing time for a change.

for what its worth, my "dealer" said to change at 5k. but to be sure, on this there, there are so many "but my dealer said this" posts. keep in mind, these dudes have are salesmen or technicians with minimal qualifications and by no means the authority on much of anything.

Nice screen name by the way.

Yeah, I guess the once every 10k oil change was a pipe dream. I guess if I hit 5500k doing about 65% city driving I'm doing pretty well. Also, I'm not a maniac but I do like me some torque!

yah, i posted in my blog the other day that i recently changed my oil in june and it's already at 40% (maybe no more than 2K miles). reason being, i rev this car very high so i suppose if it's dino oil it could degrade quicker.

Just to shed some light on things my April 2010 is at 9K and I'm looking at 30% oil life. The ECU does profile your driving style and adjusts things accordingly. All I can assume is I drive within it's eco parameters.

When I bought mine I also asked about the MM [Maintainence Minder] and the dealer told be the same as yours. This is the first car I've ever owned where I rotated the tires before the first oil change - and I've never gone 9K without changing the oil...

I trust Honda and the new oil formulations.

Welcome to the freakworld.

Wow... I'm in almost exactly the same situation.

Bought on June 21st, 2010.
Odo is at about 4350 miles.
MM is at 30%.
Avg is 29 or so mpg.
Mostly suburban driving.

Freaky.

For myself, I do deliveries, so there's a lot of really short trips. I think that's why I'll have to do my oil change earlier than some folks. However, I've decided on leaving my engine on when I walk the delivery up to the door in the hopes of saving the engine/oil life a little (instead of shutting it off and turning it back on 30-45 seconds later).

Pretty funny, we really do have the exact same driving profile.

My situation is that I lived 15 miles from work when I first got the car but on 8/5 I moved about 2 miles from work. The result is that I have a much better commute but I drive back and forth from home several times a day just because I can.

If taking a 45min siesta in my own bed means I have to change the oil a bit more often, I'll take that trade!

Anyway, that's good to see that my vehicle falls well within the expectation for folks with a similar driving profile. Now... raise your hand if that stupid tire pressure light is on!

jeesh i guess it does profile your driving. I'm at 1700mi, and my oil life is still at 90%.. I'm thinking once I switch it to synthetic that I'll just change it at every 10k mi.
