Question Rust Protection

I just become owner of 2009 Fit LX 5 spd-Bought it for my wife. She loves it. I am wondering what kind of rust proofing/protection should I applied. I had 2001 Accord that was rust proffed by the dealer. After 360,000km there was no spot of rust. Please help me make a decission. Thanks.

Hey Dundas.

I had mine done my dealer when I bought it. Any of the reputable places could also do a good job and likely a bit cheaper.

Be careful with "other places" most of the time this will void the 10 year warranty!

I highly doubt if there are ever any claims under that 10 year wty. You want to prevent rust from happening so any rust proofing is likely better than none.

i dont rust proof a already factory corrosion proofed car. wat you can do is wash the car as much as you can during the 28F-38F temp range as you dont want salt and water on the car and just keep the car frozen at night below 28F. salt by itself does not rust much unless you have moisture/water on the car. i keep my dd's frozen outside in the winter. i only wash them one a month or so.

in the spring i give them a through wash blasting water to the undercarriage. some folks place lawn sprinklers under their cars and run it for 15-20min.

Modern cars are very well protected from corrosion. Plus I worked at a dealer, and having witnessed that process, I'd never recommend it. Usually it ended up causing more corrosion than it prevented by plugging up necessary drain holes. Humongous profit margin for the dealer though.

wat doug mentioned above is very true. those coatings do sometimes partially or competely plug up the drain holes making situation worse.

also they only guarantee protection only if you have it maintained every year... and i believe that comes at a cost. it is as useless as wheel locks. mostly emotional security and minimal function.

you'll be better off cleaning your car and just spot spray the similar gunk you can buy at autoparts stores on areas like jack points that might be showing bare metal if that makes you feel better. your car is not going to fall apart from surface rust.

Rust Protection

Thank you all for the input. My thinking goes this way: If the car is originaly well protected (which it is) the protection would last as long as it is not chipped by the stone. So, applying hard coating undercariage would create additional protection layer. Does this makes sense?
