Honda recalling 1.3 million Fit hatchback for potential headlight loss
#22
Took it to the dealership today and they're fixing it under the recall. They didn't have the parts, so they're going to get it done tomorrow. From what I hear, they just cut the wire, remove the pin from the connector, and replace it with a new wire and pin with a crimping butt connector. Not exactly the type of repair that I would do myself, since I prefer to solder and heat shrink all electrical connections. The good news is that my buddy told me they guy that does the repair tosses the crimping butt connector and solders the new wire.

I never trust wire taps in a vehicle. They actually damage the wire. Over time, the vibration can loosen the connection and create an open. Crimp connectors are only good if you crimp them with the proper crimping tool. If I absolutely must crimp something, I use a ratcheting crimper with the correct die for the terminal I'm crimping. That way you always get the same pressure and a uniform crimp.
For any engine tuck harnesses I make or any modifications I make to a stock wire harness, I always solder all connections and use heat shrink with adhesive. When it comes to that stuff, I don't chance it by taking short cuts.
Ohh yeah. I picked up the car this afternoon. I'll check the repair later this weekend when I have time.
