How to fix broken gas cap tether pin
When I bought a 2007 Fit Sport MT in April, 2011, it was in excellent shape in spite of having 125,000 miles. One of the few problems I noticed during a 3 hour pre-purchase inspection was that the fuel cap tether wasn’t connected to the fuel filler door. It was totally loose, so once the fuel cap was unscrewed, it was apart from the car.
I liked Honda’s idea that the cap was tethered to the car so it couldn’t be misplaced during fillups. Honda used a black nylon push-pin connector to attach the end of the fuel cap tether to the fuel door. The original push-pin was still there, but because two of it’s four legs were broken off it was loose and slipped out of the hole and no longer held the tether to the fuel door hinge. I have to believe I’m not the only one who’s had this problem so I thought I’d share my solution.
My Honda dealer said the push-pin was $5.87 but it would have to be special ordered. Next, I checked with my favorite local dealer who specializes in automotive fasteners. Nuts, bolts, English, Metric, coarse thread, fine thread, he’s got it. He sells specialty fasteners such as clips to hold door panels, wire harnesses, fender well splash shields, etc.
Sure enough, he had a push-pin type fastener to replace the broken original one on my Fit. Not only was it in stock, but at 99¢ it was only one-sixth Honda’s price. This push-pin connector fits a 5mm hole, and the industry number is 19854. It’s used on some GM Saturn applications, their number is 21097229. Your supplier might have another 5mm pin that could also work for this application, there is quite a variety on the market.
I will try to attach some photos to show what’s involved to replace this pin. I hope it works, have never posted photos here before.
If not, here's the ImageShack url for three pics I uploaded:
