Locking gas caps
Locking gas caps
Hi Folks! A newbie here. Just pulled the trigger on a new 2012 Fit last weekend - love it BTW! Need advice. I was disappointed that the gas cover doesn't lock and with gas theft on the rise has anyone here installed a locking as cap? Any brand to recommend? Thanks.
Honda Element locking gas caps fit and can be keyed to your ignition key.
I have one on my 2011.

Curious, has anyone even heard of a Fit (either gen) having their gas siphoned? How about this... even a rumor?
The filler pipe (from where you put the pump, all the way to the tank itself) is easily twice as long as the pipe for the Civic or Accord (this includes the pipe that's part of the tank assembly).
If you really need it, personally, I think something like wire in tube (sold at Walmart!) would be better... then you don't have to deal with another key... especially in freezing weather.
Though, if an older Accord has an "anti-siphoning" screen in the tube... I'm guessing the Fit would probably have one too.

But I have seen the occasional report in the news of it happening in the States.
It's just, and my father agrees, with the position of the fuel tank in the Fit being under the front seats, it's quite a distance to snake a siphoning tube to it.
edit: I stand corrected.. there is an OLD thread that started near the end of july in 2007. https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/gene...honda-fit.html
Incidentally, in the same search that turned up that thread... I found a link to ehow's... how to remove a locked gas cap with/without a key. Got a flat tip screw driver? http://www.ehow.com/how-does_5079227...d-gas-cap.html

My dad claimed that it's rampant in China. I won't refute his claim, since I don't really know.

Maybe when gas gets to be $10 gallon & I need to protect it....
I don't live in a shady neighborhood but I've heard of people in my complex who have had their gas siphoned maybe 3-4 years ago. My old car (before I had the Fit) was broken into also. I think that riff raff has since moved away since it hasn't happened recently but I like the insurance. Especially with gas prices rising so fast the past couple weeks. I predict this trend isn't going to stop anytime soon.
But back on topic, I have my gas cap keyed to my ignition key. It's kinda annoying that I have to remove the key and turn the music off to unlock the cap. I also lose the cap tether but it also means I only have one key for the car and I won't likely drive off without finishing the fill up. It's a tradeoff I prefer. I may look for a way to mod a tether...

Someone crawled under my friends car in the middle of a packed parking lot and cut his fuel line to siphon his gas....while He was in the back of it trying to get with some girl(which he failed miserably at).
Hum... what if the girl was partnered with the thief? She's the distraction.
There are 2 anti siphoninh devices built into the filler hose of newer cars(last 6-8 years) which is why thieves drill gas tanks. The biggest advantage the Fit has is that it is a small gas tank. If it helps you sleep at night get one, but they aren't siphoning anything from your car.
There was a neighborhood kid hitting cars in our neighborhood stealing gas. Had to put a locking gas cap on my old 2003 Saturn thanks to him. Cheaper than the assault charges if I ever caught him.
Hasn't been an issue since I got the Fit.

I had half my tank siphoned out of my fit recently... at my university's parking lot...
