Cruise control sucks?
Hey so a few months back I was on a road trip and was using cruise control up I5. I set it around 75 and it was killing my gas. So I set it lower to like 65 when I was at a low rpm but it still seemed to be guzzling gas faster than without cruise control. I thought cruise control was supposed to save gas! Anyone know what's up?

1) Over 70 the Fit's gas mileage drops like a rock.
2) Small motors aren't good for cruise control, they have no torque to climb hills or even small grades and the cruise control reacts to the changes too slowly, which usually results in the ECU opening the throttle quickly when you're already going up the grade, increasing engine load and lowering MPG.
I know the ride up and down the 5 seems like it's flat, but it's not, there's a lot of elevation changes.

Agree w/ Wanderer. Going up those slight inclines, handles some OK, others downshifts & up to 3200 rpms, which just sucks the gas. I either cancel cruise and smoothly accelerate up hill, or increase speed with pedal to above cruise speed until top the hill.

The cruise control is a good thing when on perfectly flat roads but I have never seen a road that are like that for more than a few miles... The cruise control on my car hasn't been used since I installed a throttle spring and electronic throttle controller... I was consistently getting between 37.5 to 39 MPG when driving at 80 MPH before supercharging the engine....

i had always thought cruise control was a better way to save gas, until i read this :x i still wonder how in the world do you guys get 35+ mpg! i can barely maintain 30 mpgs city >< i've tried everything in the books about saving gas..but nothing changes. what could i be doing wrong?

There are tons of threads on here about getting the best gas mileage on this forum, read through some of them, but here's a quick rundown:
1) Avoid stop and go if at all possible, hold your gear and coast at idle if in freeway traffic, don't clutch in stop, clutch out go, etc. Leave some space in front of you and just idle
2) Use engine braking when coming to stops, fuel injectors shut off when doing so
3) Don't bog the motor, use the proper gear to accelerate (downshift to accelerate, don't just use the throttle!)
4) Keep speed under 70mph if possible.
There's a lot more, but read through the other threads on here to get more idea. It's hard getting +35mpg in the city, so don't feel bad.
