Exclamation Smell with A/C

Ok, so I noticed a while ago (but I thought it would go away) a faint smell when A/C was on. It kind of resembles acetone, and it typically occurs after moderate acceleration when the a/c cycles back on (sometimes just cruising at highway speed). Some times it is stronger than others, but it drives my wife nuts (4 months pregnant and alot more sensitive nose than I have) to the point where she sometimes insists on having the windows down instead of air. I just wanted to know if anyone else had noticed this. I have AT Sport with 3500 miles on it. I will be taking it to the dealership for oil change, and checking on suspension issue, alignment, body panel rubbing(rear quarter panel against rear bumper cover). I have dealt with other dealerships before with warranty repair, and I want them to take this serious. Any ideas?

i follow all of the post a/c procedures. like turning a/c off opening vents and letting it run for 30 sec or so to relese any moisture. and I too smell something odd at certain accelleration points

Could be some mold or something in the system as mentioned. It could also be cosmoline. Cosmo is a grease used as a metal preservative. Some car companies use cosmoline in areas of the car, usually engine area, while shipping so the salt air doesn't introduce any corrosion. My Hyundai had that smell for a while when I got it, but it burned off after a few weeks.

Well, I would assume that since the smell has been there since I got the car, mold probobly wouldnt be a factor. I have had it for almost three months and it has been driven daily, so burning off is unlikely(unless it is VERY slow). Does anyone know what refrigerant smells like(if it has a smell)? That was my concern that their was some sort of leak. The smell is kind of metallic in nature, but strangely reminiscent of high school science class and acetone.

I've noticed it as well. It only seems to smell when I have it on 1. If I turn up the AC, it seems to go away.

Dont Set Your AC to Recycle!

Do you have the AC set on recycle mode?

During the break-in period for the Fit or any other car, there will be various smells the car will emit. This is normal and should go away in a month depending on your driving. If you have the Air Conditioning set to recirculate the cabin air, it will only get worst. Make sure to have the AC pulling in fresh air instead of recirculating the inside air during this break-in period.

some honda's come with that smell, its like the bnew smell that comes with it, my civic 7th gen when it was new smelled like gym socks when the A/C was on at 1 and at 2.5kRPM acceleration. it went away after a year, but anyway, its nothing toxic or hazardous to health, my wife and i had a baby girl just then.

If they managed to get cosmoline in places that don't get very hot (like near the AC evaporator), it won't melt off! It needs probably at least 100-110 degrees to start melting.

Depending on where you are, that could be any old hot day. Down here it would be!

Maybe after the winter when you've been able to run the heat a bit, it will dissipate?

Hopefully it will get better. At any rate when I take it to the dealership at the end of the month I can look forward to them blowing it off and thinking Im crazy. Oh well, as long as they fix the other stuff.
