That is just the heat shield for your catalytic converter. You probably ran over something and ripped it off. It's not really that important, some people just remove it all the way.

Cheer up!

Cat Converter Heat Shield

taking the heat shield off is fine ONLY if you park on clear/clean cement/black top 100% of the time. If you ever park over grass or where there is a small pile of leaves, the super heated cat, now exposed, can easily set grass/brush/leaves on fire. So if you don't mind seeing your car go up in flames, I'd avoid ripping the heat shield off. It does serve a purpose.

Yikes with a name like Burntz, I tend to believe you when it comes to fire!

Is a heat-shield a 'generic' part that I can get replaced (and how much$$) or is it something I'd need from a Honda dealer and pay out the wazoo..

Thanks

Cheap Canuck wants to fix it himself. As the converter should be still wty by Honda maybe the shield is too? Give them a call. It would save having to spend a couple Toonies on wire.

Your pic and where in Canada?

Agreed. The Cat is warranted for much longer than the bumper to bumper warranty and may be covered by the dealer. As for cost, I would knit myself a new cover before ever paying money to a dealer. I have a long time relationship with a mechanic and would always take it there first. I suggest you find a reputable one in your area. For instance, after buying this car a couple of weeks ago and reading all your great advice, I asked both Honda and my mechanic for quotes on adjusting the valve clearances. My mechanic was over $150 cheaper.

Out of pure curiousity I called the dealer to find out how much a replacement cat costs, (I was about to sell mine).... lets just say if you could get your hands on someone's used one do it. It is a really expensive part.

A replacement catalytic converter? big bucks for sure, but covered by the emissions warranty for quite some time (at least in the USA, as required by federal law).

The sheet metal heat shield? That is a whole lot cheaper to replace. But from the looks of things, it doesn't need to be anything more (for the OP) than bending the existing shield back into position and reattaching it somehow, with some new bolts or wire or whatever.

The heat shield is made of thin sheet metal so you could take it off and straighten it out very easily possibly using just your fingers then put it back on.

I have never had to mess with one on a Fit but on most vehicles it is a simple bolt or clamp on arrangement. A wire or a heater hose clamp (less than $1.00) would probably hold it in place again.
