LOW MPG thread

2007 Honda Fit Sport (5MT), 362 miles. Topped if off at 78 miles and I was getting 36mpg (10% City, 90% Highway 65-70mph).
At this point, I've taken it up to about 4000RPM 3 times, otherwise I'm below 3000. 30% City Driving, 70% Highway (65-70mph)... came up to 41.16MPG!!! It cost me $18 to fill up my tank from 1/4 full! HAHAHA! Beats my Prelude which costs $45 (24mpg in the Lude)

2008 Fit Sport AT now with 6000 miles.
Only once did I ever get over 30 mpg and that was one long drive about 80 miles in no traffic on a sunday. I got 32 mpg with three people in the car.
Most of the time I get about 25 mpg rarely much better than 26 to 27.
Tire pressures above 34 psi don't seem to do much. I have used as high as about 41. Rough riding.
Heavy urban driving, short trips and hilly terrain are all very bad on mpg plus the automatic which is the key to the whole problem.
I reported it to the Honda salesmen and they claimed to be surprised. They sell 9 AT to every one MT.
Mind you, in order to get 25 mpg I drive very very carefully with a scan gauge II to assist. Without trying I can easily get 20-25 mpg. My 2006 Civic EX AT driven exactly the same way on the same terrain routinely gets 30-32 mpg with the same gas.

just about 100% stop and go driving
10% ethanol in gas all year long
16x7 wheels (fairly lightweight) with 205/45-16 tires
somewhat agressive driving
38psi in tires
no ac used now
Royal Purple full synthetic at first change, now at 7k miles.
My commute every day is 15 miles each way, and it takes me about 45 minutes one way, so lots of sitting and idling which sucks.
I average about 25mpg, my worst was just at my last fillup at 22mpg, best was a 300 mile drive a few weeks ago and I got just a hair over 32. Even trying to drive very conservative I only get about 27 with my commute.

The absolute worst mileage I've yet gotten was 31 mpg on a 100 mile partial tank two weeks ago. I'd come in from a 600 mile trip with the whole family and a week's worth of luggage, laptops, coolers, etc where we got 36 mpg running 70 or better with the A/C on. I can't explain the horrid mileage except that maybe the computer was still trying to adjust for the crappy gas I bought outside of Knoxville (E-10). It's either that, or I didn't fill it up properly the tank before...
Best tank to date was 49.65 mpg, and I usually average better than 40 mpg on my daily 45 mile commute. Oddly enough, my FE went down after my first oil change, which was performed at the dealership. I checked it last week, and it was 1/2 quart over full.
