Honda likely knew of its ( ammonium nitrate ) instability for many years . One of the reasons to be aware of it being unstable , Special Report: Plant with troubled past at center of Takata air bag probe | Reuters , occurred in 2006 . They were / are invested (1.2% , one of largest investors ) in TAKATA as well , http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/05/bu...apan.html?_r=0 . If so , they are partly to fully responsible . The ammonium nitrate is cheaper , but less stable . So much for savings with the recall ( http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articl...-at-24-billion ) , hurting their finances and integrity , but with much less horrific / deadly results .
