Fit going uphill

How well does ur fit go uphill, especially the AT?
Mines revs and downshifts whenever it goes uphill.. even on smallest hills... it revs up to 6k.. and the engine gets really loud..
how about u guys?

Mind does too, and as it is a small engine, that is the way it is supposed to work. Put it is cruise, and it will do all this and hold the speed, even going down hill. Try and overide the gear choice in cruise, it will work for a while until it reaches the rev limit, then it will 'pick' the next 'right' gear.

The engine does rev into high RPM's a lot depending on how you drive. Honda specifically says this is a "high-revving engine" though.

I try not to scoot up hills.. I like to use the speed from before the hills to aide in going up them, which keeps the revs lower.. also I got a MT so i can choose what revs I want pretty much

yep - speed up before i come to the hill, so i don't have to make the fit work to hard at maintaining speed - i think if you don't do this, you kill your mileage

I have an AT sport and mine does ok up hills. I climb an 8 mile 6% grade daily to work and I can cruise up it at about 50-55mph at around 3500-4000rpm. I know I am not going to go fast up it so i don't try to rev the engine hard to go faster.

I just charge up the hill and accelerate if I see it coming

I have a MT sport and I go uphill every day and I have to put 4th on 50% of the way, but is that I am going 70mph because if I go 50pmh ( speed limit), the car will like feel very tired all the way up, so I think it will be more happyy going fast than trying to keep pace on 5th gear, tho it will do fine but peppyless all the way up in 5th only. I'll gess that will end with a turbo ( I wish to have one)

took the Fit to the local canyon yesterday....have a Sport AT model. in S mode the thing dosent due too bad and yes the motor is loud but it IS a honda motor w/ VTEC

in D mode its nothign more than ok going uphill.....S mode is the key and the chassis is amazing....very solid and very stable (even on crappy A/S tires).

Mine's an AT, and even on the overpasses it really revs to charge the hills. I use cruise control on my morning commute, and by revving the Fit holds the speed perfectly. I've been wondering if that is affecting gas mileage. Also wonder if the loud noise has any impact on hearing over time. A road test of 7 vehicles (was that Car & Driver?) found that the Fit's noise level was higher than its competitors. It won out as best overall vehicle, but I didn't like seeing the dBA above the others.

On my first road trip with my Fit, I went through the notorious "Grapevine", the stretch of highway between Bakersfield and LA, which part of it is a good 30 miles of steep inclines and mountainous area. My Fit AT struggled, only reaching 55-60 mph, and didn't have much zip. In other words, it was disappointing at best. Since then, I have played with the paddle shifters and used them when I drove to Yosemite national park (also known for steep inclines and mountainous driving), downshifting when approaching a hill. The Fit performed much better, had more control and zip. Although it's decent for such a small car, I still wish it had more power...

The original question was - how does AT Fit perform uphill.

There is certainly a performance vs. efficiency aspect which S-mode addresses to some extent (mentioned earlier). Engine noise at higher RPM can also be a factor for some folks (I don't usually mind so much).

When I want it to be quiet and efficient, I use the paddle shifters to keep it from downshifting. Performance is usually fine unless I want to pass :-)

Normally I use D and it is fine (I live in Indiana)

Sometimes I use S to stay more flexible.

Living in Indiana, it's mostly flat- so it works well here.
