Red face I think I did a dumb thing

Ok- I've driven manual transmission cars all my life- but my 2015 fit is the first with 6 gears.
I was on the highway yesterday for a 40 mile trip north, and was using cruise control. It was hot (maybe 88-90) outside and I had the a/c on. I was cruising at maybe 77 mph.
I noticed the car was revving really high- up above 5000, yet not nearing the redline. I thought this was strange.
On the way home it was much cooler outside(67 or so) and when I checked the RPMs it was down near 4000 going the same speeds.
I Wondered if temp was the culprit but now in hindsight I think I might have been in 4th gear instead of 6th?
How bad was that on the poor little engine? The car didn't shake or anything, except the engine was really LOUD. I'm worried I did really bad damage to it.

It's fine.
It's a Honda, it's made to handle that, it can run all day long like that.
Gas mileage might suck though.

No worries, the only thing that suffered is your gas mileage.

You did no damage. You have to really go out of your way to do real damage.

Hondas are known for their ability to rev high and they like it. What's the redline for the Fit, ~6,750rpm? Look at your tach, it's marked in red. You still had 1,750 rpm left. You can rev all the way up to a theoretical 8,000 rpm and there's a rev limiter that will prevent the engine from going any higher. There is virtually no way to damage the car this way, unless you drain the oil.

Honda motorcycles are the same. As riders say, rev the nuts off 'er.

No joke- the trip up there I still got 30mpg in 4th gear...still not awful.

But the trip back I averaged 41.5.

Yeah, I find myself forgetting the top one or two gears sometimes. I shift down passing through a small town, then speed up leaving, forgetting to shift back up. The engine doesn't seem to care much, one way or the other, so it's easy not to notice for a while.

I just assumed it's because I'm old. Then again, all the fun is in the first four gears anyway.

high rpm is not recommended during break-in, but you weren't pushing the engine (just cruise) so probably no issue.

it's good to vary the engine speed while you're breaking in though.

No worries at all IMO. I'm sure Honda already smacked that engine off the redline before it came off the assembly line. Pretty funny story though.

Our CR-V and Fit are so smooth, I've caught myself in a lower gear without knowing it.

It won't hurt anything, though.
