Traveling/Moving

Has anyone ever really loaded their Fit for a cross-country move? How much does it hold? How does it handle the weight? Any input will be appreciated.

Yes, I've done several heavily-laden cross-country trips with my '08 Sport 5MT. My take:

Typical family moves - furniture, possessions and the like - are fine. As long as you're not putting boulders back there, you're OK. Some folks like to jam stuff all the way to the top of the interior, but I had zero problems because I left a little space to see out of the back window.

Now if you go stuffing boulders back there, different story. You're changing handling dynamics and the engine isn't too powerful to begin with.

Great! Thank you for the input! I need to load my car up, then find someone who wants to load their car AND drive cross-country-----that would cover all my stuff. No boulders!!

You would benefit from a rear shock upgrade. That much weight will cause you to ride those rear springs pretty hard!

I'll try not to put too much weight in it. I can't afford new shocks----but maybe I'll need them when I get there!

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. I have already done 300 miles this evening and found performance a bit diminished and any over steering could be hazardous.
Brakes great and still rides good. Funny part is the load is absorbing a lot of the road noise I usually hear. The load is not all that heavy, just things the commercial movers would not transport due to many new regulations by our tyrant king in Washington. No gas cans even if they cost 70 dollars and zip tied and dried out for a month and approved by DOT and for fuel storage indoors. No aerosols, alcohol, fire extinquishers, propellants, bleach, cleaners, pesticides(raid, black flag), refrigerant recovery tanks(DOT approved even) There are some interesting new laws pertaining to "cause to introduce into interstate commerce" make doing so a felony although I can transport the stuff privately legally. So that is why my car is loaded. I shipped a gun safe and guns though, no one checked them but me. They are not loaded, they are ok

People are amazed at how much I can FIT in a FIT.
Best camping vehicle ever.
Best car to haul lots and lots of gear.
Even though I have a CRV now - I feel the FIT was more flexible.

I just moved myself and my one bedroom worth of stuff from Los Angeles to Detroit with no problem. My only advice is to make sure you have zero rattles when packing. I had to pull over after 400 miles and readjust my clothes hangers due to rattling.

It had plenty of power to stay in 5th on all highways except for when I was driving up Aspen before Denver.

It took less than $190 worth of gas too.

Great! I'm putting off my move until spring or summer, but by then I should have my stuff pared down. I might have to mail a few boxes. I thought about getting a Skybox, but then I decided it wasn't worth the money, and it would be too much strain on the Fit.
