I have been using this method forever, with no ill effects.

The tolerances are even lower nowadays...

it's debatable, but i believe it, and have broken in 3 bikes, and about 4 different cars this way.

Am I driving my Fit too hard?

ever since I got it, I've been trying my best not to drive it too hard during the break-in period, but I occasionally reached a little over 4000 sometimes when I needed the acceleration. but now the car has already broken in and that's not what I'm worried about.

I'm just worried driving up to around 5000 frequently would shorten the life of the engine or it might blow one day. I know they're supposed to be reliable engines but I just love it too much and it hurts me to push it so hard... but I can't stop! haha

what do you guys think?

oh, and I get sub 30 MPGs... anyone else experiencing the same thing?

The way you talk about your style of driving, I'm surprised you're even getting 30mpg... In the Fit, your mileage is greatly affected by how hard you drive it.

I'm averaging 31-32mpg and I frequently go above 4k and I'm city driving 95% of the time. I'm not one to baby my cars, but they have never let me down.

just make shere the engine is warmed up completly before driving hard. as long as the engine is completly warmed up then i dont see any harm. now if you were to take it to redline often or into redline, thats another story.
remember, its a honda. which tend to last a long time, and love to rev.

As long as the engine is warmed, and you are properly maintaining your car, especially the oil and filters, you can zing to redline as often as you want. There is a rev-limiter that will stop you from doing any harm to your engine.

I used to take my Civic to near redline all the time, changing to second gear at around 45mph, than third at near 90mph... I was making that D16 engine really work hard Yet when I was driving slow the engine purred like a kitten, not a single problem. Honda's racing know-how and experience has been built into all their engines, and the Fit's engine is no different. From day one I've been driving it like I've driven my old Civic, though since my Fit is now automatic (yeah, I'm getting old) I don't go near redline as often as I did. Still haven't taken the Fit for its first oil change, but will keep it well maintained, as I did my Civic.

The rev-limiter is a daily occurence in my driving style. I know I won't have any problems.

yes your mileage will improve over time as the engine is worn in. =)

don't freak out just yet.

I don't think you're going to blow anything with a massive 109HP on tap...

When your toes tickle the injectors all the time, you won't get great gas mileage.

The biggest factor in fuel economy is YOU.

I don't think you'll do any damage to the engine revving it close to redline, you'll just end up paying more for gas!

Made me chuckle.....kind of like a suped up john deere. Anyway, rev limiter shifts me out of first at 6k in standard auto, 6.3k in sport mode, and 6.5-6.7k with paddles (although not consistently that high). I thought I read somewhere that the redline was 6.3k (dont jump on me if I'm mistaken) and appears to be 6.5k on the tach. I tend to beat cars a little bit too much and Hondas seem up to my poor judgement. I also once beat a Nissan Sentra to 350k miles until a deer kept it limited there. I think in the world of rev limiters, you are pretty safe. Man I ramble.....sorry.

changes after break-in

I'm at about 4200 miles now. I haven't had my first oil change yet. Lately i've been noticing the Fit seems a bit quicker, accelerating faster. My mileage has also levelled off and is pretty consistent (even slightly increasing!).

Anyone else have observations similar after a few thousand miles? Or is it just my imagination or am I just figuring out how to get the most out of the engine/transmission?

Mine is approaching 8,900. Maybe part of it is just getting used to each other. I was pleased that at the last fill-up I found the mpg was up above 31. It's been around 28 mpg up until now.

I'm only at 2100 miles, but on a recent road trip we got 40mpg on our tank back to town. This was with mountain passes (8000+ ft difference), AC on all the time, and 4 passengers and luggage. Previously we were getting around 33mpg for freeway driving.

My Insight took about 6000 miles to break in well, mileage started increasing a bit and fell into an average rate.
