Dude,
Just drive the GTI. I have about a 130 mile round trip commute every day. A fun car makes for a fun commute. I went from 2 SAABs in a row to my Fit back in 2009. I loved the car but the lack of turbo gave me "fits." Sure, gas mileage was great. But it was so frustrating to always be cut off by every truck. After 3 years, I wanted something faster and traded for a Civic Si. After 2 years (and several thousand in "upgrades"), that wasn't fast enough either so I bought a Mustang GT. I commuted the %^&$ out of that Mustang. Most fun I had in my life. Had to trade it off when I had a bit of back surgery. Still miss it. I bought a Lincoln MKC 2.3l t for a nice cushy ride. But now I'm thinking of going full circle and scooping up a "new" Fiesta ST that's still hanging out on a small town dealer lot nearby.

I love the Fiesta ST, but have to chime in since you mentioned back surgery.

There are two seat options. The base comes with cheap seats that offer little support. ST2 and 3's come with the most uncomfortable Recaro seats that I've ever had the displeasure of sitting in. I tried my best to talk my wife into buying an ST3 (even promised to change the seats in it), but the distaste they created for the entire car made that a no go for her.

I daily a Lincoln MKS Ecoboost. Great seats and ran a 12.86. Comfort and go can be combined

Love my Lincoln. I'm just toying w/ the idea.

Yeah, I thought after my surgery that I needed a vehicle w/ easier entry/exit from then on out so I looked at small luxo-crossovers. The Lincoln had the best low end torque of everything I drove. But I have a kid that needs a car and I'd rather buy myself something new than them something cheap and used.

The back is all better now. I had a lot of pain in the weeks immediately post-surgery. A few weeks later, I was fine and regretting it. But at least I got a creamy smooth ride out of the deal.
