Brand new collectible car today...

I've been meaning to ask this for a long time now, so here goes. Apart from Porsche, Ferraris and all those high-end names, what would be a collectible car that you can buy today? For instance, I have a friend in Montreal who once owned an '87 Buick Grand National. I can't remember how much he bought it for, but by the time he sold it a couple of years ago to a dealership, he got an estimated $20k CAD cash for the car. His GN only had 10000km on it. So everything was still factory (ie. tires, windshield washer fluid, etc.). The only thing he changed was the oil.

So, let's say for $60k CAD or less, what brand new car - if kept as a collectible - would actually sell at the same price you bought it for or more?

Here's a list that I have that might fit into this collectible category:

- Mazdaspeed 3
- Mazdaspeed 6
- Mazda Miata
- Mazda RX-8 GT
- Acura CSX Type-S
- Acura TL Type-S
- Subaru Impreza STI
- Mitsu Lancer Evo IX (possibly the X as well when it comes out).
- Honda S2000
- Ford Mustang Shelby (or possibly the Rousch version as well)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I wouldn' count on most of those cars keeping their value so long.
If I could have a do over from a number of years ago, I would love to have a Hemi car, but you would have to go back 10-20 years to get one at that time for under $60k. You definitely have a lot of fun on your list.

The car would have to be rare to begin with and that is hard to do for under sixty. A sugestion go with a smaller manfacturer for example panoz, saleen, noble, spycar, renult, for a start at finding a car that might have a better chance of becoming a colectable for it to be able to reach a hemi or yanko status. just a tip. but it extreamly hard to tell with cars that the avrage person could aford wich will become collectable.

Its all about predicting the demand 20 years from now. If it is a hot commodity 20 years from now, you will be able to fetch more than what you paid. But who can justify buying a brand new car, setting it up in jack stands and letting it sit for a long long time.

I have a 20 year old corolla that bluebooks at 800 and sells upwards 4-5k

As for putting a new car purchased today on jack stands and keep it in a temperature controlled garage, one of the Shelby/Rousch/GT Mustangs.

If you expand your criteria to include cars that aren't brand new, I'd bet a first-generation Insight or Prius will be worth real money in fifty years, especially if people start scrapping them when the batteries die.

The new-ish GTO. It didn't sell very well here but it is a great car. Since few of them were sold I imagine it might become a collectible one day.

personally, out of all the ones on the list, only the Shelby will be a collectable. It's the only one that's limited edition. THe Miata will be a club car like MG's and Deloreans. Mazdaspeeds aren't as unique and special like "M" BMW's or AMG MB's. For it to be a "collectalbe" it's gotta be some what limited edition and/or made for a few years.
