More than once I've been confused about the sex/gender of posters here, because guys use girls as avatars. Why do you guys do that?

I'm not the only one who gets confused about who is what either.

This seems to be mostly guys here, so it wasn't all that surprising that folks thought I might be a guy too.

But why would guys use pictures of girls as their identity? Even if it's a famous, well-known person to YOU, I have no idea who is in that picture.

I have to ask. Because I don't know.

Is it like one of those guy things about men's magazines? Sort of putting up pictures of girls somehow makes it more of a guy place? Like sharing a magazine? Or something?

I don't think I've ever seen a gal do that. Put up a guy picture. Should I go look for a picture of a guy in a thong with greased up buttocks to fit in?

 

I had girls in my avatar sometimes. i just will put something in there i like. I dont think of it as a gender identifier.

 

I have an idea! How about a place on our profile, under the avatar image to put a caption or short text description?

It would only show in the profile, not on each post. So that people could, if they wanted to, identify what or who is in the photo.

Like:
My new custom wheels
My dream car
My 09 Fit

Or:
My favorite singing star (insert famous name)
Funny picture I found online (like the one I have in my profile)

you can put up a profile picture. when you click on my username, there is a picture of me in the upper left hand corner. the avatar and the signature isnt a tell of ones gender and it never was. partially because the first rule of the internet are guys are guys and girls are guys unless you know otherwise for absolutely sure.

although i do think its lame when someone puts a girl in their avatar.

i did use McGee Alice for avatar on some other forum. i guess that meets your scenario of a guy using girl on his avatar. so the answer your question -

i have no particular pattern for my avatar pics. on this forum its "Nothing" for example, lol.

No reason really...people put avatars of what they like.

I'm a big mecha anime nut, so I've put avatars related to that. Even my nick "Type 100" is a reference to 1985's "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam."
