what to do fit vs. GTI
I don't know why everyone is bassing all of their comparisons around autox I h8 autox lol if anything I drag race so the nimblesness of the fit has absolutly nothing to do with my desision im sure the gti and the fit can get down the track just as st8 as one another lol =p I plan on going to the vw dealership and sitting down with a salesmanager and going over the maintnance routines and cost and seeing if I can afford that thanks for bringing that it is more expensive to keep them up I never thaught of that. But I would rather have a 250 hp gti (after ecu flash) than a fit if I can afford it and if it will be reliable I have 2 friends that have a 06 gti and an 06 a4 and so far they said no problems with either. And I've driven both so im starting to think that vws of the past have been shotty but it may be possible in an attempt to save their reputation they are producing better vehicles. Also the weight issue. When a gti is stock tuned (cpu tuned) without performance parts it vs a stock sti or evo if were going for engine stuff here. Its only at most 100 lbs more and more functional for me and the hp deficit at the wheels is like 20 hp wich isn't to bad plus its 8 grand cheaper than both and gets far better gas milage.
don't worry about evo's this and sti's that. despite its peformance potential, i've never liked the evo as a car, and my love for the sti comes from a soft spot i have for subaru.
some people are all about what puts down the better numbers, others realize that what you drive is a very personal choice, for very personal reasons. i'd take a gti over an evo in a heartbeat, just because the styling, performance, looks, and interior...hell the whole approach to doing a sport compact, is more appealing to me on the VW. I'm with ya on that man!
if you are into drag racing, the gti's lack of nimbleness should be a non-issue. The fit is a bit more taut than the rabbit was and it lean significantly less through the corners, but the rabbit always had more grip. the gti will be sportier than that and grip even harder. everything is a tradeoff.
this post is interesting...i have a question for you. Have YOU ever driven a mkV? because after being an owner of both it and a fit, i can throughly attest that the rabbit handled bumps and road imperfections worlds better than the fit, while still being athletic if not AS althetic as the fit.
now if your experience lies with mkIV vw's, ok then. because those were all shod with torsion beam rear suspensions too, whereas the mkV's have moved on to a multilink independent rear, which is where the big improvment lies. The gaps on my mk5 were super tight and actually superior to that of my 06 civic.
its kinda unfair to call the gti out on its requirement of premium fuel; honda makes you do the same thing for the si!
and what car doesn't start to feel like it looses its 'luxury' or overall feeling of 'niceness' and 'performance' after you have owned it for awhile? it never feels like it did when you first had it, but that doesn't mean that its not going to feel as sharp on its toes as it always did. Age affects everything.

specifically, if the car (B5, B5.5, MK3-5) is in heavy cornering and hits a big bump or pothole mid-corner, i have noticed very significant displacement of the steering column. my 1991 535i with 215k miles still does not do that, same roads, same idiot driver. big deal to me? yes. because VW and audi markets their vehicles to be upscale, high quality cars, so my expectations are high. i expect them to have high quality parts that last a long time and that the car has the depth of character to improve give a smartly chosen set of mods.
but my experience with them in a variety of daily driving, serious driving, and maintenance has shown me that if you're the driver that notices the subtleties (such as massive cowl/ steering column shake) or notices how much more your gas/ service/ parts bill is compared to others, you get very disappointed. honestly, i felt misled, but the VW marketing machine convinced me too and there's no one but the dummy that forked over the cash (me) to blame for that one.
just my opinion, coupled with observation at the local autox and HPDEs that i like to dabble in - VWs aren't competitive there whether stock or otherwise. there is an occasional VW that shows up an evo on a youtube video, but other than that extremely rare occasion (street "racing" < drag racing < nascar) i just think that people should see through the marketing hype and the facade of luxury that VW sells.
opinions are like @$sh0les, we all have em, and they're all stupid.
love to get into an evo/sti debate sometime.
yes i have driven an MKV. i have owned a b5, and have driven for significant amounts of time the b5.5 and a variety of other VWs.

your post insinuates that the mk3-5 are almost like the same car. not. versions 3 and 4 used a torsion beam rear, bumpiness is simply not a trait of the mkV. even edmunds and car and driver have commented extensively on this.
and lets not throw in the b5 comparos as they are a totally different chassis. i don't think that vw is the greatest thing ever, but as far as percieved luxury goes, all you have to do is test drive everything in the rabbit/gti's respective class (civic, 3, sentra, elantra, corolla etc) to know that there is a slightly higher quality feel to the car. it says nothing for reliability, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the obvious difference.

I had to choose between the fit and gti so I went to a vw forum and lurked around and found that a lot of vw owners are recommending to stay clear of VW if reliability is a major factor. But if you just want to go fast I'd say just go ahead and get the gti but be prepared to spend some money on repairs when you start tinkering with it. It's not even fair to compare the fit to the gti that you like, it's like comparing apples to oranges. They're completely different animal species.

please dont. its a resistor that's put inline with your iat, so the ecu thinks it's getting colder/denser air, so it dumps fuel. you are not going to get any hp out of it. its a waste of money.
I just traded in my 03 Mk IV golf last Wednesday for a Fit.
The GTi will be a better car if you're looking for something sporty yet with utility. Handles well, goes well, stops well and all the standard stuff makes the Fit seem a little outdated.
HOWEVER.. with all the electrical gremlins common to VWs, coupled with over-engineering, really expensive maintanence, bad paint (used my rust and preforation warranty a 59K  ) and high insurance, you need to know what you're getting into. I know the OP said insurance was the same, but I'm assuming he's under the age of 25.
For me, the Honda was a worry-free car and that peace of mind was worth the choppy rear suspension and no dead pedal :D

I was in the same boat. I was choosing between the 2. I have decided I am going for the Fit Sport due to the issues I have read with VW's. I have owned 19 Honda's and have never had any issues. Normal wear and tear and thats all. I really like the GTi but with rising gas costs and having to worry if things are going to break, its is just not worth it to me. Don't get me wrong the car is awsome but I have a 07 Civic Si w/navi sedan if I need more speed. Picking up my Fit today:)

I have a Dodge Caliber with the magic carpet smooth CVT transmission. But I wanted to drive a VW GTi with the Dual Clutch tranny to see how smooth that tranny was. Its stunning what technology & computers can do! Never did I ever feel anything but seamless continuous acceleration. Its a 6 speed transmission, but only the engine sound will give you an indication how many gears are in the transmission. Seat-of-the-pants knowledge will tell you that there is only one gear.
As wonderous as the DC tranny was tho, the 200HP engine is even more stunning! Both my Caliber & the GTi have hesitation when you tromp the gas pedal. But the GTi quivers like a tiger ready to pounce on prey & before you accelerate, you know you're about to go for a slingshot ride. The 200 HP is nice, but it is the torque of the VW GTi that really defines the ride. Almost all the torque is available even below 2000rpm! That flat torque curve is one reason why the DC tranny is so smooth, along with sweet electronics guiding the tranny all the way. You will be comfortable at all rpms, since power is available at all rpms.

which is unfair against the gti, because ill effects after mods shouldn't be a factor with regards to reliablilty.
hell, there are about a million things we can compare these two cars over, but ofcourse, because one of them happens to be a veedub, reliability is all we can focus on.
Kraftworks Super Charger FTW?
Fit (2500 pounds, 109hp; KW added +30%?) would it beat the
GTI (3100lbs,180-200hp)? Or
Rabbit (3138lbs, 170hp)? Or
Golf (2910 lbs, 115hp)?
:vtec: any predictions?
i wanted a white one sooooooooo badly but they dont make them anymore so she is black...
