91 Civic: Seat belt alarm
Hi;
I have a 91 4 door Honda Civic.
The seat belt alarm has been going off at random intervals for no
apparent reason.
When it does, it goes off for a long time. Needless to say it is
getting on my nerves.
My mechanic replaced a small pen-like spring, which helped. It does it
less, but it still does it.
He told me that if I could bring it in while it is going off that he
could find the circuit responsible for the sound and burn it out.
The problem is, it happens at random. I can't afford to ditch to go to
my mechanic whenever the behavior comes back. I can't reproduce the
problem at will.
Can anyone suggest an alternative solution?
Thanks
Steve

the audible alarm, or the flashing light?
there's a sensor under the seat that's supposed to tell the alarm
circuit whether to work or not - no if no one's sitting there. check
that out. if it's just the flashing light up on the mirror mounting,
you can take the bulb out.

Lucky you. You have those stupid "motorized mouse" automatic shoulder
belts.
Does the light come on as well?
Three possible culprits:
1) Lock position sensor in the door pillar where the belt ends up at the
end of its travel
2) the switch inside the buckle's receptacle
3) Shoulder belt retractor switch
If either sticks, breaks, or comes loose, it can be grounded, turning on
the buzzer.
Your mechanic needs to study the wiring diagram carefully. There are only a
few possible causes. If he has not got the diagram (inexcusable!!) I can
send you scans of the Integras's system for that year, which should be the
same.

Yep.

The light doesn't bother me, the alarm beeping at random intervals for
long periods of time does! :)

He is a fairly modern mechanic. I see studing materials all over his
garage. I think the diagrams would be very helpful.
Could you send them to
beforewisdom@gmail.com ?
I will forward them to my mechanic and ask him to try again
Thanks so much for the help!

Re: 91 Civic: Seat belt alarm
91 Civics have a lifetime warranty on the seat belts. This should be
indicated on the warranty material that came with your car. I should think
this problem with your Civic would be covered, as it's very much arguably a
safety issue. Call the dealer and find out.

I bought the car used, though from a dealership. I will give them a call

Check your email!
The automatic belt system is fairly simple despite its apparent complexity.
A good technician should be able to hunt down the problem easily given the
wiring diagrams.
Good luck.

When I had a similar issue with my '90 the dealer said it was not covered by
the seatbelt warranty, but maybe the OP's dealer would see it differently.
On my car, the alarm always beeps every time I turn on the ignition whether
I have a passenger or not, and the light stayed on always. I removed the
bulb from the light and learned to live with the beeping.

I believe you but I think I'd contact American Honda via the contact info
(including a toll-free number and hours) at the site below and inquire,
firmly. The light staying on constantly would still be sufficiently unsafe
for me to ask for warranty service on this. American Honda contact info:
http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/Customer/index.asp
I see also that American Honda says that the warranty is supposed to be
intact regardless of how many times a Honda changes ownership. See

I called my honda dealership ( I bought the 91 civic there used ).
They said they would inspect the car for free, but they wouldn't cover
the cost of repairs if the beeping was due to foriegn matter in the
circuits. My gut feeling is that they have seen it before.
There hours are lousy, but I am thinking about taking it to them to find
out what is wrong and then taking it to my regular mechanic to fix ( the
honda mechanics get #200 an hour ).
Then again, maybe I will just give my regular mechanic all of the cool
info from this thread and let him have another crack at it.
